As <span style="font-weight: bold">Landline Internet Mobile and Entertainment (LIME) </span>comes towards the end of downsizing exercises, a further 50-100 workers are set to lose their jobs over the next nine months.

The job cuts are part of some 1,200 set to be on the chopping board regionally.

Errol Miller, regional vice-president for corporate communications at LIME, <span style="font-weight: bold">formerly Cable and Wireless</span>, said the layoffs would be conducted periodically until September 2009.

Almost complete

In Jamaica, Miller said the restructuring of the company was almost complete and, therefore, these were the last of the downsizing.

&quot;We are moving to a number that is optimum for operation,&quot; said Miller.

The employee target for the company regionally is 2,500. Currently, there are 3,700 workers across the Caribbean.

Miller said he was unaware of when the job cuts would begin.

The company, which competes with two other telecommunications firms locally, has been reducing staff for the last seven months.</div></div>

Cable &amp; Wireless has dropped its ancient name from its 13 operations across the Caribbean, with a complete re-branding to Lime.

The move — following the tradition of other fruit-related technology branding, notably Apple and Orange — follows less than six months since the UK-based group carved Cable &amp; Wireless Caribbean out of its existing Cable &amp; Wireless International division, with one overall CEO, Richard Dodd.

Cable &amp; Wireless International is the unit of the company that includes incumbent operations in widely scattered, though small, countries across the world. Most of them are former British colonies, now independent, but they include Monaco, the independent country on the French Riviera.

The name stands for &quot;landline, internet, mobile, entertainment&quot; though the full suite of services will be available only in some markets. The Caribbean region is made up of a diverse range of separate countries with their own telecoms legislation.

According to local media in the Caribbean, all remaining Cable &amp; Wireless branding will be phased out in 2009, and staffing will be reduced from 3,700 to 2,500.

There is no change of shareholding. The Cable &amp; Wireless group announced in May 2008, with the appointment of Dodd, that its international division would act as a financial investor in what was then Cable &amp; Wireless Caribbean.

Before October 2008 the company was planning to demerge the international division from the rest of the company, Cable &amp; Wireless Europe, Asia &amp; US. However those plans are believed to be now on hold until stability returns to the markets. GTB

look like they got hold of some of the smaller caribbean islands lingo bout liming and usurped it for themself.
