Russia sends the Admiral Chabanenko to Cuba on the third leg of its Latin American tour in a 'significant' move aimed at naval cooperation.
Following joint drills the Venezuelan and Nicaraguan naval forces, the missile destroyer Admiral Chabanenko is expected to lead two other Russian warships into Havana docks on Friday renewing the Russian naval presence in the island's costal waters less than 20 years after the Cold-War.
A spokesman for the navy had described the visit as a "significant practical step towards strengthening and developing ties between the two states' navies," AFP reported.
"This will be the first visit to Cuba by Russian warships since the Soviet days," RIA Novosti quoted spokesman Capt. 1st Rank Igor Dygalo as saying.
The Western media described Russia's presence in Latin America, including the 5-day Cuba visit, as an attempt by Moscow to mirror Washington's moves in Russia's neighborhood.
US warships have been regularly hovering about in the Black Sea since the brief military conflict between Russia and Georgia in August.
Russia accuses US of masterminding the conflict, charging that the naval presence in the Black Sea was aimed at rearming Georgia. </div></div>
