if my son or daughter who is a minor tells me they will now like to weild the same authority over their lives that i do, i would also not take too kindly to that challenge;

You miss the point. My statement above was not one regarding the existence/non-existence, and therefore, omnipotence, etc, - or lack thereof - of a god, but rather, based on certain passages in the Hebrew Bible. So your little comment above is neither here nor there.

a good example to me is nuclear power...man has gained the knowledge and power to ruin the god-given habitat;
space exploration is a part of that...
like if everything we need is right here on earth, yet we chose to destroy the earth and search for other habitats...

In jewish and islamic literature, in particular, the &quot;tower of Babel&quot; is used to represent human hubris, man's attempt to not 'know his place' and to build structures that reach into the heavens in defiance of god. In the Koran, there is this amusing story of some king (not Nimrod) who wanted to build a tower that went up to heaven so he could personally confront god. In some cultures, the story has been used as a way to explain the origin of languages (which scholars and linguists have always rejected), and also the 'nation state' - also rejected.

What is clear though, from all the archeological findings, is that the building was bold in its architecture, way advanced in relation to the times. And while the tower may most likely have been destroyed by earthquake (unlike todays skyscrapers, it was not built taking into account the shaking from earthquakes), it represented a major human achievement, the triumph of the human spirit, to dream and to dare. The religious embelishments of god confusing their languages, and preventing the final completion of tower are all human projections and are best understood in the sociological context of the times, and they portray a deity who is jealous of human achievement, as the passage from the book of Genesis depicts.
