I do...mi always mek sure mi house is spotlessly clean and all the laundry is done before the new year start to get rid of all the old years crosses.

I also adopted the dustbowl tradition of cooking black eyes peas for good luck...except you are supposed to share it with your neighbors and I don't talk to mine.


what do you do?

Oh and I also always make sure there is cash in my wallet.

My madda and granny always seh dat yu fi clean out di ole crassis before the new year ketch yu wid it. NYE was always like spring cleannig at my house.

Bout 20 seconds to midnight mi a start load 12 grapes (seedless, small ones) into mi mout so dem is fully loaded no later than 5 seconds before di new year a buss.

Then at di stroke a midnight mi a clamp down wid di incisors pon di grapes an di grape juice a splatta inside mi mout while mi a mek a wish fi a nice nice new year.


You shoulda see my one year inna crisis! All now mi de a Thailand an cyaan fine no grapes! Finally all mi can find is di giant size ones. No way 12 a dem coulda fit. So mi a cut dem in two an put 12 halfs inna mi mout.

Lawd a massi! A soso bad luck fi 6 out a di 12 months! Aye sah. Mi neva nuh go cut dem again.

Tanya you and I have the same ones but I also put a raw piece of the cabbage that I cook for January 1 in my wallet for the year to attract the other kind of green throughout the year . I know - strange, but a lot of Louisiana people I know do the same thing.

We need to put as one of our 2009 resolutions to cultivate a warm and fuzzy relationship with our neighbors .......... NOT!

Clean the house, wash and go to bed before 12:00 Midnight, but I learned that the Chinese think that is bad luck to clean the house before the New Year because you might sweep out your good fortunes gained that year <span style="font-style: italic">(assuming of course you have good fortunes)</span>.
