Well, they can commit the most egregious human rights violations, war crimes, and flagrantly violate international law and norms, and the powers that be won't give a damn. You will only hear the usual &quot;Israel has a right to defend itself&quot; crap. That's what Bush said yesterday, and the prez-elect has, through some spokesman, issued a similar p-u-s-s-y a-s-s statement. In American, politicians and most in the media will blame the Palestinians for the conflict. Any UN resolution against Israel will be vetoed by the US. You must wonder how the fifth largest military in the world with a military industrial complex almost the size of the US will have to defend itself against, essentially, a pack of bandits. They fire a few rockets into Israel who then uses that as an excuse to go into Gaza and murder 1000 people. Excessive force invalidates a claim of self defence.

After January 20th he can stand up for what he believes in.
Even if he doesn't have the power to significantly change the US policy towards Israel, he can make public statements that do not condone Israels actions. I'd respect him if he don't beat about the bush like his predecessors and call a spade a spade.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Hotels in ritzy Dubai scrambled to rework new year's plans today after the city's ruler issued a last-minute order cancelling celebrations in solidarity with the people of Gaza Strip, where a fifth day of Israeli air strikes are underway.

New Year's Eve is one of the busiest times of the year for Dubai's hotel-based bars and restaurants, which typically boast lavish dinner packages but steep entry fees.

The official news agency WAM announced the ban late last night.

The order called for Dubai to mark the new year &quot;with a sombre tone as a token of solidarity&quot; with the Palestinian people and with the Gaza Strip in particular.

A number of New Year's celebrations were also cancelled in Jordan, where roughly half of the 5.8 million people are of Palestinian descent.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Israel rejected international pressure to suspend its air offensive against Palestinian fighters whose rocket barrages are striking close to the Israeli heartland, sending warplanes Wednesday to demolish smuggling tunnels that are the lifeline of Gaza's Hamas rulers.

The diplomatic action was set in motion by the scale of destruction in the Gaza Strip since Israel unleashed its campaign Saturday, and a casualty toll that Gaza officials now put at 390 dead and some 1,600 wounded. Hamas says some 200 uniformed members of its security forces have been killed, and the United Nations says at least 60 Palestinian civilians have died. Four Israelis have been killed by rocket fire, including three civilians.

The chief of Israel's internal security services, Yuval Diskin, told the cabinet Wednesday that Hamas' ability to rule had been &quot;badly impaired.&quot; Weapons development facilities have been &quot;completely wiped out&quot; and the network of smuggling tunnels has been badly damaged, a participant in the meeting quoted Diskin as saying.

He spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was closed to the media.

Overnight, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert discussed a 48-hour truce proposal floated by France with his foreign and defence ministers. The meeting ended with a decision to continue the punishing aerial campaign.

&quot;Giving Hamas a respite just to regroup, rearm is a mistake,&quot; Olmert spokesman Mark Regev said. &quot;The pressure on the Hamas military machine must continue.&quot;



Calls for an immediate ceasefire have also come from the United States, the European Union, the United Nations and Russia. President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice personally called leaders in the Middle East on Tuesday to press for a durable solution.

More than two dozens rockets and mortar shells were fired by mid-day Wednesday, including five that hit in and around the major southern Israeli city of Beersheba, about 30 kilometres from Gaza. No serious casualties were reported.

Early on Wednesday, Israeli aircraft pounded smuggling tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border in another attempt to sever the lifeline that keeps Hamas in power by supplying weapons, food and fuel. Israel and Egypt blockaded Gaza after Hamas violently seized control of the territory in June 2007 and have cracked open their borders only to let in limited amounts of humanitarian aid.

A huge explosion rocked a tunnel that housed a fuel pipeline and warplanes also smashed the house of an alleged smuggling kingpin. In all, two tunnels were destroyed in the raid, Egyptian security officials in Rafah said.

In Gaza City, air strikes sent high-rise apartment buildings swaying and showered streets with broken glass and pulverized concrete. The Israeli military said government buildings were hit, including an office of Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

A Palestinian medic was killed and two others were wounded when an Israeli missile struck next to their ambulance east of Gaza City, Palestinians said. The Israeli military said it did not know of the incident.

Israeli navy ships also fired at Hamas positions along the coastline.

Although Hamas leaders have been driven underground, spokesman Taher Nunu said the Gaza government was functioning and had met over the past few days.

&quot;What our people want is clear: an immediate stop to all kinds of aggression, the end of the siege by all means, the opening of all border crossings, and international guarantees that the occupation will not renew this terrorist war again,&quot; Nunu said in a statement.

Israel has been massing troops and armour along the Gaza border in an indication the air campaign could morph into a ground operation. The government approved a plan to call up an additional 2,500 reserve soldiers late Tuesday, following a decision earlier this week to authorize a call-up of 6,700 soldiers. The call-ups have yet to be carried out.

In two phone calls to Defence Minister Ehud Barak on Monday and Tuesday, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner appealed to him to consider a truce to allow time for humanitarian relief supplies to enter Gaza, two senior officials in Barak's office said.

While rejecting the truce, Israel said it would allow 2,000 tonnes of food and medical supplies to enter Gaza on Wednesday, in addition to 4,000 tonnes the military says have been allowed in since the offensive began. Several dozen chronically ill Gazans have also been authorized to enter Israel for treatment Wednesday, the military said.

The UN planned to resume food aid distribution Thursday, after halting it two weeks ago because of shortages caused by the blockade. Most of Gaza's 1.4 million residents rely on UN food handouts.

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni was to travel Thursday to Paris for talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has put his growing international stature to use in other conflict zones, most recently to help halt fighting between Russia and Georgia in August.

Kouchner said Wednesday he and Sarkozy are considering travelling to Israel next week.

A Hamas spokesman said the group wouldn't halt rocket and mortar fire until Israel ended its blockade. &quot;If they halt the aggression and the blockade, then Hamas will study these suggestions,&quot; Mushir Masri said.
