They found out during the vetting that they owed taxes. Geithner paid over some and Daschle paid over some.
The question is should Barack Vetting Team say right then and there you owe a few dollars in taxes you can't be on the team?
I think it you have to give the applicant the benefit of the doubt. If he or she says well I did get a notice in the mail that I owed some taxes, we are disputing it but I am going to go ahead and pay some money, my tax advisor will talk to IRS, then you have to say okay let's see.
I think ultimately what did Daschle in was not the taxes but the conflict of interests with his lobbying effort direct at Health and Human Services. The substantial position that he would oversee if his Nomination was confirmed.
