They found out during the vetting that they owed taxes. Geithner paid over some and Daschle paid over some.
The question is should Barack Vetting Team say right then and there you owe a few dollars in taxes you can't be on the team?

I think it you have to give the applicant the benefit of the doubt. If he or she says well I did get a notice in the mail that I owed some taxes, we are disputing it but I am going to go ahead and pay some money, my tax advisor will talk to IRS, then you have to say okay let's see.

I think ultimately what did Daschle in was not the taxes but the conflict of interests with his lobbying effort direct at Health and Human Services. The substantial position that he would oversee if his Nomination was confirmed.

LOL...so you are saying he is trying to form a Bi-Partisan Cabinet, he get wind of a guy who might want to be in his Cabinet, he reaches across the isle gets the guy, then the guy has cold feet.... it is of course Barack's fault!

It was more than cold feet; it bordered on deceit. He decided to back out when he realized that Obama wasn't going to put back the Census Bureau under Commerce. Census was removed to the White House when Obama thought of picking him. Judd and republicans always wanted to get their hands on the Census Bureau so they can decide how certain populations are counted and how re-districting is done.

As you suggested, Judd sought the job in Obama's cabinet; it wasn't Obama who sought him out. Obama knew what Judd wanted. So why did he still pick him? Or was it so he hoped he could get a supporter in the Senate whom the democratic governor of New Hampshire would pick to replace Judd and move the dem caucus to 60?

Judd had been iffy on a number of things. Research showed that he had spoken negatively about the Census undertaking before. He then went on to make his bed harder by publicly stating he will not be voting on the Stimulus.... I think after this the floodgates opened and he started receiving calls and mails to his office about his position.
