Daniele Watts audio: Tape claims to reveal police called to Django Unchained actress after public complaints of 'lewd acts' in car




Django Unchained actress Daniele Watts made headlines after she accused the Los Angeles Police Department of racism and falsely detaining her in a lengthy post on Facebook.

According to her version of events, officers had approached her and her white boyfriend Brian James Lucas after they were seen “showing affection, fully clothed” in public. They handcuffed and held her in the back of a car after she refused to hand over her identification – an act, she claims, was unjust and typical of the racial profiling that exists in the police force.

She wrote: “As I was sitting in the back of the police car, I remembered the countless times my father came home frustrated or humiliated by the cops when he had done nothing wrong. I felt his shame, his anger, and my own feelings of frustration for existing in a world where I have allowed myself to believe that “authority figures” could control my BEING… my ability to BE!!!!!!!”

Her boyfriend supported her claims in a similar post that included images of her wrist, having been injured from the apparent force of the handcuffs. She was not formally arrested, and was later released, a police spokesperson confirmed to Variety on Sunday (14 September).

But new audio footage purportedly of the altercation, obtained and published by TMZ from a "police source", indicates there may be more to the incident than her initial account, if the tape is genuine.

In it, police Sergeant Parker can be heard seemingly explaining to Watts’ boyfriend Lucas that he was answering complaints made by members of the public – including, according to TMZ’s report, a nearby Directors Guild office building – that the couple had been seen engaging in “lewd acts” in their car.

Watts had just left the CBS studios in the San Fernando Valley at 2pm on Thursday (11 September).

“Somebody’s made a call, and that gives me to be here. It gives me the right to ID you. By law,” Sgt Parker [the police officer] says.

“Do you know how many times the cops have been called just because we’re black? Just because we’re black and he’s white?” a female voice, reportedly that of Watts replies. “I’m just being really honest, sir.”

“Who brought up a race card?” Sgt Parker responds, before reiterating he has “every right” to ask for her identification.

Watts continues: “And I have every right to say no, and if you’d like to demand it, you can take me down to the court office and I can make a scene about it. And you know what, I have a publicist, and I work as an actress in that studio, OK?”

Watts then appears to become increasingly frustrated as she insists she has done nothing wrong and is on the phone to her father.

After she continues to refuse to hand over identification, Sgt Parker can he heard requesting a female officer.

Watts continues on the phone to her father, reiterating her “right to sit on the f**king street corner and make out with my boyfriend”.

She then attempts to get Sgt Parker to speak to her father on speaker phone, but Sgt Parker refuses.

“I would already be gone, by the way,” Sgt Parker tells Lucas. “I’ve got your license. I would already be gone.”

The audio footage ends there, but TMZ’s report continues, adding that she was approached by another officer after she walked off, and brought back to Sgt Parker, where it is claimed she then lost her temper.

The report concludes by alleging Watts intends to file a legal complaint against the LAPD.

A spokesperson for Watts is yet to respond to request for comment.

The Django Unchained actress who accused police of racially profiling her for kissing her boyfriend in public has refused to apologize - despite calls from civil rights activists.

Daniele Watts claimed she was harassed by the Los Angeles Police Department, who arrested her as she made out with Brian James Lucas in a car parked on the street last week.

However, police maintained there was no racial element to the incident, prompting civil rights experts to accuse the actress of 'crying wolf' to cover her own back.

But despite the backlash, Watts last night refused to apologize for her comments in a statement.

Although she made no mention of race in the document, sent via her publicist, Watts maintained that she was not obligated to present identification to police.

She said: 'It is a constitutional right that we do not have to present ID to any member of law enforcement unless we are being charged with a crime.'

Watts and Lucas were questioned last week by officers investigating a report of lewd conduct. Watts, who is black, refused to provide identification and was briefly handcuffed until police identified her.

An audio recording, obtained by MailOnline, reveals the hysterical actress confronting police in a heated exchange during which she uses the N-word, and claims legal expertise from her experience playing a cop on TV.

The fallout from the incident led to prominent civil rights activists decrying Watts in public and saying that she was harming their cause.

Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson, who initially rallied behind Watts, told reporters: 'I for one was very outspoken about it.

We take racial profiling very seriously. It's not a play thing. It's not trivial.'

But he said that, in this instance, there was a 'provable cause' for Watts's detention, explaining: 'You must have your facts. You can't rush to judgment. If you do that, you have no credibility.'

According to NBC, he added: 'It's like crying wolf - after a while, it has no meaning.'

Project Islamic Hope President Najee Al also spoke out against the actress, who played Coco in the 2012 film Django Unchained.

He told CBS: 'She should be embarrassed She's the one that told the lie. She came and stated she's a victim of racial profiling. We found out later on based on new information that she wasn't.'

The newly-unearthed audio file came shortly after still images showed Watts straddling Lucas in a parked car.

Recordings captured the moment that police slapped handcuffs on Watts after she walked away from an officer who asked to see her identification.

Watts and the officers involved disputed whether her ID card was necessary, followed by Watts bringing her acting experience into the fray.

In the audio recording, Watts sobs after being cuffed. An officer can be heard trying to calm her down.

Sgt Jim Parker, a 25-year veteran of the LAPD, says he was offended by claims that Watts was harassed because she is a black woman with a white boyfriend.

Sgt Parker said he's witnessed first hand many of the department's most dramatic moments - including the 1992 riots over the beating of black motorist Rodney King and the 1997 North Hollywood shoot out.

Throughout his career, he says he has watched the LAPD become dramatically more sensitive to race relations and diversity.

Watts and Lucas maintain they were doing nothing wrong - and that they were only making out, not having sex.

Sgt Parker said he fears that if he and other officers had not recorded their run-in with Watts, her allegations would have ruined their careers.

'She picked the wrong person to make a public incident out of a private matter,' he said.

The LAPD has said it is conducting a review of the officers' behavior, but all three remain on the streets. A spokesman yesterday said the department had no response to Watts's statement.

The actress's publicist, Bill McCoy, said she is not planning to take further action.

Civil Rights Leaders Denounce ‘Django Unchained’ Actress, Demand Apology To LAPD

Civil rights leaders Friday called for a “Django Unchained” actress to apologize after claiming Los Angeles Police Department officers racially profiled her.Project Islamic Hope President Najee Ali, Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson and other civil rights leaders held a meeting at 9:30 a.m. denouncing Daniele Watts after a recent incident.
Watts, 28, was detained by officers responding to an “indecent exposure” call on Sept. 11 in the 11900 block of Ventura Boulevard in Studio City.
Police said they had received several calls about a couple engaging in lewd behavior in a parked vehicle. Watts, a black woman, said they were merely showing affection and claims officers were racially profiling her because she with her white boyfriend, Chef Brian James Lucas.
An audio file recorded by a sergeant captured Watts refusing to give her identification and insisting officers were giving her a hard time because of her race. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck defended the officers’ actions.
Civil rights leaders previously called the incident a blatant act of racial profiling before the audio recording and several photos were released.
“We have nothing to be embarrassed about. She should be embarrassed. She’s the one that told the lie. She came and stated she’s a victim of racial profiling. We found out later on based on new information that she wasn’t,” activist Najee Ali said. “We didn’t make a rush to judgment. We can to aid a victim who we thought was victimized. For us, she’s wrong. That’s why we’re demanding Daniele Watts apologize not to LAPD but to our community.”
