While the legislature is trying to cut the budget, more Floridians are looking for government help.

The Department of Children in Families is now sending food stamps to nearly 2-million people, about one out of every 10 Floridians. The state wide numbers are up 30% compared to last year.

DCF secretary George Sheldon says the housing market collapse has put a lot of normal people out of work.

"The almost 600-thousand new people on food stamps today are a unique population. These are people who have probably never applied for benefits before in their life," Sheldon said.

He says the number of people on food stamps is growing faster than any state, and the increase alone is more people that the entire food stamps program in Massachusetts.

And they are handling the higher case load with a smaller staff. Budget cuts have forced them from 7-thousand employees, to 4-thousand. And the state is likely going to ask them to cut more during this special session and for the next budget year.

The food stamp program is now putting out 2.3 billion dollars in food stamps.

St. Johns County leads northeast Florida with a 45-percent increase up from 44-hundred to 83 hundred. 20-thousand more Duval county residents compared to 2007 asked for food stamps, a 26% increase. There was also a 36% jump in Clay County and 27% in Nassau County.
