A 22-year-old Rutgers University student was killed by a ferocious black bear in a New Jersey nature preserve — the first fatal encounter of this kind in the Garden State since 1852.
Darsh Patel was hiking with four pals on Sunday in the Apshawa Preserve, which is just 35 miles west of Manhattan, when the 300-pound omnivore started following them, police said.
The five hikers scattered as they ran for their lives, police said. But when they regrouped later, Patel was missing.
Police retraced the hikers’ steps and found the victim and the suspected killer bear “lingering” near his body.
“There was a bear that was circling the area that would not leave the victim,” West Milford police Chief Tim Storbeck said Monday. “The search and rescue team that had been back there was clapping their hands, trying to make noises … trying to scare it off, but it never really left.”
