Come to think of it, never in the 8 years of airline work, have any of the two companies trained me in a simulator for ditching. Yes there is a checklist in the Quick Reference Handbook for it, and the training manual describes in detail about how you are to touch down parallel to the sea swells, and cut the fuel to the engines just prior to inpact, but we never practiced that in the simulator.

Previous company trained us in all-engines-flameout scenario, but that was only after an accident had happened, and the FAA forced them too. At any rate that scenario was designed with enough time for all engines to quit, get restarted, quit again and restarted again all at a comfortable altitude.

So I don't think these guys (or girls) at the controls relied on their training for this manouvre. I think this was basic airmanship skills learned back in primary flight training where stick and rudder skills mattered, and not in the airline world of &quot;managing&quot; the computer instead of flying the plane.

Big up to the flight deck and cabin crew for a job well done.

Don't forget Magix that the pilot was a fighter pilot in the Air Force in the '70's and has been flying for US Air for 29 years. He is a very experienced and seasoned pilot - nothing beats experience in an emergency.

The pilot is a 57 year old man, head grey up and ting. I don't know how to post links (me ole too and computer challenged). It's on Yahoo news. He was also on the 3AM news this morning.
