The disgusting debauchery of Sean Shaynak, 44, came to light after the Brooklyn Technical High School math and physics teacher was charged in August with sending a penis picture to a 16-year-old student.

But that was only the tip of his perverted misdeeds, according to a newly unsealed, 36-count indictment that includes counts of kidnapping and criminal sexual act against girls ages 13 to 19.

“We discovered six additional students,” Assistant District Attorney Joseph Mancino said in Brooklyn Supreme Court as he laid out the charges. “The defendant, clearly from his actions, looked to groom these students.”

Shaynak took a 15-year-old girl without permission to a nude beach in New Jersey and, at his home, plied her with vodka, tequila and whisky until she passed out, Mancino said.

The two exchanged some 10,000 text messages and her teacher asked her to participate in lesbian sex with another student.

He gave another student 100s “regardless of the fact she did not do any assignments and left tests blank,” Mancino said.

The girl resisted when the sex became too kinky, he added, but the teacher forced himself anyway.

With yet another teen, Shaynak allegedly carried on a “four-month sexual relationship” that included him taking her to an out-of-state gay sex club and having her watch him “serviced” by men, a source said.

He also took her to what was described as “a terror ride” from Queens to Brooklyn that ended with her hiding in the bushes as he screamed and banged on his car, charged Mancino.

“He threatened to tell her parents,” the ADA added.

The teacher also sent the full frontal photo to four students and when investigators searched his computer, they uncovered pornographic images, including bestiality, according to prosecutors.

"It is shocking that a public high school teacher allegedly sexually preyed on vulnerable students,” Brooklyn district attorney Kenneth Thompson said in a statement. We will now seek to vindicate the rights of those students."

The criminal conduct started in the fall of 2012 and continued until this summer, court papers say. The teacher is facing 25 years in prison for the top charge, but can get a lot more for the multiple incidents.

Shaynak, of Flatbush, has been teaching for five years at the Fort Greene attended by Mayor de Blasio’s son Dante, although a student told The News that he did not take classes with him.

"Some people were aware of it. They said that they saw it coming, that he was a perv — the way he looked at girls,” said Tangina Ahmed, 16, a junior at the school. “I find that really gross.

Others were surprised by the allegations against the amateur pilot who ran an aerospace after-school club.

Defense lawyer Kimberly Summers pleaded not guilty on his behalf.

“My client maintains his innocence on all these charges,” she told the judge.

She claimed that one student “was working on a project with him, which would explain the voluminous text message” and noted that the divorced father has a 9-year-old girl, which would give him incentive to return to court.

The teacher’s bail was set at $1 million bond.

He has been previously assigned to the rubber room, where he continued to collect a $52,744-a-year salary.

"These alleged actions are completely unacceptable and have no place in, or outside of, our schools,” said Department of Education spokeswoman Devora Kaye. “He is not, and will not be, in contact with students. Student safety remains our top priority."

New York laws make it so hard to fire bad instructors that a whopping 61% of city teachers convicted of wrongdoing and targeted for dismissal were returned to their classroom jobs, a new report says.


"While teachers are legally entitled to due process to protect them from unfair dismissal and unjustifiable accusations of inadequate performance, the current system goes far beyond that, prioritizing the rehabilitation of ineffective teachers over ensuring adequate teaching for children," the report says.

New York State teacher tenure laws and job protections are the target of two pending lawsuits launched earlier this year after a similar suit in California resulted in that state's tenure laws being declared illegal.


Union officials and supporters of the job protections have said the laws help attract good teachers and keep them working in the public schools.

She got to know Mr. Shaynak — “ShayShay” to his favorites — during her sophomore year, when she and a friend went to his classroom at lunch. He tutored them in geometry. He sometimes bought them lunch outside school. He gave one of them cigarettes.

Then, at one point, Sean Shaynak, the hip aerospace teacher in his early 40s with a flight simulator in his classroom, asked the girls if he could take pictures of them in the park, to inspire a nude painting he wanted to do. According to a friend of one of the girls whom she later confided in, they thought the request was weird and put him off, saying they were too busy. They told no one. They thought: Why ruin a teacher’s life?

But this past June, a year after one of the girls had dropped out of Brooklyn Technical High School, Mr. Shaynak sent her a picture of his penis over Snapchat, the app that lets people send messages that disappear in seconds. Horrified, the girl took a screenshot. The app notified Mr. Shaynak of the screenshot. He then sent the girl two pictures of his face looking angry.

She told friends and eventually her parents, and her father reported it to the authorities. The existence of that photograph began the unraveling of Mr. Shaynak, 44, a commercial pilot who became a Brooklyn Tech teacher in 2009 and now stands accused of preying on seven female students over three years, plying them with alcohol and cigarettes, exchanging racy text messages and photos with them, and taking one to a nude beach and another to a sex club, according to an indictment announced this week by the Brooklyn district attorney, Kenneth P. Thompson. The teacher had sex with two of the girls after they reached the legal age of consent, 17, law enforcement officials said.

In interviews on Wednesday with dozens of students, virtually all said they had no knowledge of inappropriate sexual behavior on Mr. Shaynak’s part. But many knew that he was unusually close with some students, often in ways that might alarm parents, including smoking with students and sometimes attending their parties.

But these signs were not so much missed as, apparently, kept private by the only people who really knew Mr. Shaynak — his students, who liked him and saw him as one of their own. In this way, the authorities said, he was able to gain their trust and “groom” the girls he pursued.

And in the elite halls of Brooklyn Tech, a cavernous school with 5,400 students and more than 250 teachers, it was easy for Mr. Shaynak to be almost anonymous. Many students did not know him at all.

A science teacher who insisted on anonymity because the administration had not authorized him to be interviewed said that the faculty itself was so big that it was easy for people not to know Mr. Shaynak.

“To this day I don’t know everyone’s names, which is a credit to the sheer size of the building,” he said.

Mr. Shaynak, who has been indicted on 36 charges including kidnapping, criminal sexual act, obscenity, endangering the welfare of a child and sexual abuse, faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charges. He has pleaded not guilty, and remained in jail on Wednesday, his bail set at $1 million bond or $600,000 cash.

But for years, Mr. Shaynak had managed to avoid tripping any wires, while coming very close. In 2005, he was accused of beating up an 11-year-old neighbor in Maryland who had thrown rocks at his house. When he applied to work as a New York City teacher, the Education Department discovered that he had been criminally charged, but he was not convicted and the charge had been expunged from the public record. A search of public court records, however, would have turned up a restraining order against Mr. Shaynak with information about the accusation.

Mr. Shaynak later lost his job as a pilot — laid off, he told one student. He lost his Maryland home in a foreclosure. And almost as soon as Mr. Shaynak recovered, reinventing himself as the cool teacher, he started acting inappropriately with female students, law enforcement officials said.

Those students who did know Mr. Shaynak were loyal. Two groups in particular — the smokers and the children in his aerospace classes — saw Mr. Shaynak as the rare teacher who talked like a teenager. He made students feel relaxed, told stories about flying and doled out cigarettes and hugs. He was the hip teacher who wore jeans, smoked with older students and drove a Mini Cooper, that is, when he wasn’t riding the B train home to Flatbush.

“He was like a bro, you know — you could talk to him like you could talk to any of your friends,” one sophomore said of Mr. Shaynak, who he said would often give him cigarettes.

Mr. Shaynak, who taught physics, math and aeronautics, ran the Aerospace Club and taught the aerospace engineering major. He brought in a flight simulator from home, set it up near his classroom’s front doors and taught his best students how to use it. Last year, seniors had a project to build a covering for the simulator, to make it seem even more real.

Prosecutors said Mr. Shaynak gave one of his victims 100s on tests even when she left answers blank. But students said he had a reputation as an easy grader, giving boys good marks just like the girls.

“He was liked by many students for being a relatable teacher that allowed you to complete work in his room, and gave good grades to most students, not just girls, unless the student was really, really, bad,” said one senior, 16, who insisted on remaining anonymous because he feared classmates’ reactions. “I know a few guys that got 100 in his class, and I got a 98.”

How loyal were students? Even though some students thought he was overly friendly with some of the girls, they apparently told no one. After the Snapchat photo led to his arrest in late August on charges including distributing indecent material to a minor, no one reported any other behavior to the police, said one law-enforcement official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the case was continuing.

Instead, the official said, investigators identified six other victims by looking through photographs and other evidence culled from Mr. Shaynak’s computers and phones.

The victims have “mostly been cooperative,” but are somewhat reluctant, the official said, explaining that the suspect was a manipulator.

Among the seven victims were different ethnicities and nationalities, a virtual cross section of the student body: Middle Eastern, Russian, Latino, Asian, Caucasian. Some of the victims knew one another. Some did not. It is not clear if they talked to one another about their experiences with Mr. Shaynak.

“I think he focused on ones who were insecure, and liked to get special attention,” the official said. “But they had different backgrounds. They weren’t just one type of person.”

Kimberly Summers, Mr. Shaynak’s defense lawyer, said her client denied all the charges. She said she had been contacted on Wednesday by several students willing to speak on Mr. Shaynak’s behalf. The students said he was friendly with students, but they would be surprised if he would ever do anything aggressive, Ms. Summers said.

Mr. Shaynak grew up as one of four children of a tightknit family on Long Island. A brother, Craig Ricci Shaynak, is a character actor now appearing in the Showtime series “Ray Donovan.”

Mr. Shaynak was living in Havre de Grace, Md., on Oct. 3, 2005, when an 11-year-old named DeVonte Watson was playing outside his home across the street. He was throwing rocks; one apparently hit Mr. Shaynak’s house, and Mr. Shaynak then came across the street and confronted the boy.

Mr. Watson, now 20, his older sister and his father said that even though Mr. Watson apologized, Mr. Shaynak beat him and threw him to the ground. The boy had to go to the hospital, and the Watson family was granted a restraining order against Mr. Shaynak for six months. Although a criminal charge was filed against Mr. Shaynak, he was not convicted. The charge was later expunged.

“I feel like somebody who would do that to an 11-year-old should not have become a teacher,” DeVonte Watson said.

Ms. Summers, Mr. Shaynak’s lawyer for the sexual abuse charges, said Mr. Shaynak only grabbed the boy and did not beat him up.

When asked about the restraining order, an official for the city’s Education Department said all employees underwent a vetting process that included fingerprinting and a background questionnaire.

By 2008, Mr. Shaynak, who has a daughter, had broken up with the girl’s mother, who moved to a small town about 500 miles away. Mr. Shaynak moved out of his Havre de Grace home with the red front door and the siding exterior, taking his dog.

But the house did not sell. Mr. Shaynak stopped paying the monthly $2,800 mortgage that October. Soon, the bank foreclosed on the house, but by then, Mr. Shaynak was in New York, starting his new career.

“How could this man ever become a teacher?” a stunned Watson, who lived across the street from the creep, told the Daily News. “It’s like him becoming a pediatrician. You shouldn’t have that right after you beat up a kid.”

Mayor de Blasio asked the same question about accused pervert teacher Sean Shaynak, and he called on the Education Department to dump the father of a 9-year-old girl after his alleged sexual abuse of the Brooklyn Technical High School students became public.

“It’s disgusting,” declared the angry mayor, whose son, Dante, is a senior at the school. “This is someone who clearly should not have been a teacher, and I guarantee you he will never teach in a classroom again.”

But the sex-crazed Shaynak, 44, was still collecting his $52,744 salary Wednesday while locked up on Rikers Island on a stunning 36-count indictment filled with stomach-turning details.

Education officials said they were moving quickly to cut the six-year teaching veteran loose.

“We plan to vigorously pursue his termination,” vowed a Department of Education spokeswoman. “As soon as these allegations emerged, the DOE took swift action to reassign Mr. Shaynak so that he was not, and would never be, in contact with students.”

Education officials also acknowledged they were aware of Shaynak’s 2005 arrest in Maryland — although they would not say if they knew the target of his rage was the 11-year-old Havre de Grace boy.

He was hired in August 2008 despite a background check that turned up the arrest because there was no conviction in the case, officials said. The court document was revealed during a fingerprint check.

A Maryland restraining order charged the 6-foot-5, 220-pound Shaynak choked Watson from behind, tossed the much smaller boy to the ground and repeatedly punched the child in his head and face.

“I was outside my home, just being a boy. I was throwing rocks. I threw a couple of rocks when I saw him walk aggressively toward me,” Watson, 20, told The News, cradling his own 6-month-old son, Devonte Watson Jr., in his arms.

His sister was standing behind him in when they heard the future teacher yell, “Where the f--- is your mom and dad?”

That’s when things got violent, Watson said.

“He literally jumped on top of me. It happened so fast ... He was beating me with a closed fist.”

His frantic sister yelled at the attacker to stop, but he was relentless, Watson said.

“It was painful ... he was really going at it. My face was hurting. Both my eyes were black, bloodshot. My face was swollen, the whole nine yards,” he said. He wound up in the emergency room and missed several weeks of school.

Shaynak was swearing at the boy and kept pounding Watson until the victim’s older brother intervened, court papers indicated.

Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña twice ignored reporters’ shouted questions about Shaynak on Wednesday.

Shaynak, speaking to The News from behind bars Wednesday, promised to answer the bizarre charges of sexual shenanigans with his 13- to 19-year-old students — just not yet.

“I do want to tell my story,” said Shaynak. “I have a defense. Now’s not the time . . . I will tell my side of the story in court.”

Shaynak wore a lime-green jailhouse jumpsuit, sandals and dark socks for his brief Q&A on Rikers Island — where the story about his wild sexual antics was torn out of copies of the Daily News delivered to inmates.

The overwrought Shaynak walked away without offering any details about his defense.

He simply picked up his chair, moved away from the visiting area’s plexiglass divider and sat with his back to a News reporter.

Asked why he was rubbing his eyes, the jailed teacher replied, “I’ve been sleeping. There’s nothing else to do here.”

And then he fell silent.

Joe Herrera, whose daughter is in 10th grade at the school, said knowing Shaynak may have preyed on students is “absolutely frightening.”

“We send our kids to school for a safe learning environment. To hear the person you entrusted with your child has other sick twisted motivations is one of the worst things a parent can hear,” Herrera told The News Wednesday.

“Six years and access to kids and not one red flag,” he said. “Now all these things are coming to light, it makes you wonder. I find myself doing background checks on my kids’ teachers.”

Teachers union head Michael Mulgrew said Shaynak had no job protection from the United Federation of Teachers.

“The city has the ability to remove this person from payroll,” said Mulgrew. “I don’t comment on individual cases but I will say this: Anyone who is a member of the United Federation of Teachers who does anything of this sort of activity, the least thing they need to worry about is their job because they won’t have one.”

The charges unveiled Tuesday against Shaynak included these stunning tales of perversity:

-One teen received straight A’s while sleeping with Shaynak, despite turning in blank test papers.

-A 15-year-old girl was driven to a New Jersey nude beach and given booze until she passed out.

-The same teen exchanged more than 10,000 texts messages, with the teacher encouraging her to experiment sexually with another female student.

-He engaged in sex with other men at a gay-sex club while another teenage lover watched.

He sent nude photos of himself to four students — including two underage girls.

Shaynak’s risqué and risky behavior began in the fall of 2012 and continued through this past summer, prosecutors said. He faces 25 years in prison on the top counts of the indictment.

The entire sordid list of his perverted acts came to light after he was busted in August on allegations of sending pictures of his private parts to a 16-year-old student.

At the high school Wednesday, some kids were not entirely shocked at the charges against Shaynak.

A sophomore who had Shaynak for math said the teacher was a trouble magnet.

“The kids who did bad things gravitated to him,” said the 15-year-old.

“People are actually creeped out that he was here at Brooklyn Tech,” said student Victor Zoicu, 15. “We can’t believe he was doing this. Everyone thought he was such a nice guy.”

The Brooklyn Tech High School science teacher who cops say had sexual relations with seven female students — rewarding at least one with perfect grades — also may have victimized boys at the elite school, law enforcement sources said.

The latest allegation was made by one of Sean Shaynak’s female accusers as she was being interviewed by detectives.

Shaynak could be hit with more criminal charges as a result of the new allegations, sources said.

Meanwhile, long before Shaynak’s alleged reign of terror at the school, a Maryland family took out a restraining order against him for allegedly punching and choking their then-11-year-old son, DeVonte Watson.

Shaynak was living in Havre de Grace, Md., in 2005, when the boy threw rocks at his house while his baby girl was asleep on the porch, a neighbor said.

Shaynak struck and throttled the boy and threw him to the ground like a rag doll, Watson’s family said.

“The kid needed his *** beat, but you can’t handle it that way,” former neighbor Jeff Dressler told The Post.




Shaynak was arrested, but charges were dropped, though local officials declined to explain why.

The family said neither cops nor prosecutors pursued the case. A spokesman for the Havre de Grace Police Department said all records of the incident had been expunged from their files.

Defense attorney Kim Summers insisted Shaynak grabbed the boy but never struck or choked him, and that’s why the case was dropped.

But the boy’s dad, David Watson, said Wednesday that Shaynak’s alleged school victims might have been spared had he not beaten that rap.

“The system didn’t work for us. I hate for those kids that they had to go through what they went through when he could have been stopped. It’s amazing to me that he was ever hired as a teacher,” he told The Post.

A schools source said the arrest turned up in a background check when Shaynak was hired in August 2008, but didn’t affect his employment because there was no conviction.

The Education Department has started the process to fire Shaynak, who is not tenured, though he continues to receive his $52,700 salary.

A teary-eyed Shaynak, who has been cooling his heels in Rikers Island on $1 million bail, protested his innocence in a short jailhouse interview Wednesday.

“I will tell my side of the story in court. I’m facing negative repercussions for this, so I will choose not to speak,” said Shaynak.

A furious Mayor Bill de Blasio — whose son, Dante, is a senior at Brooklyn Tech — said Shaynak should never teach again.

“It’s disgusting. This is someone who should clearly have not been a teacher,” he said.

The accused predator was slapped with a 36-count indictment Tuesday.

Sean Shaynak, a divorced dad-of-one who taught math and physics at Brooklyn Technical High School - one of New York City's most selective public schools - was indicted on 36 new counts involving six students on Tuesday.

It came after he was charged in August with using Snapchat to send a picture of his genitals to another 16-year-old student at the school, which is attended by Mayor Bill de Blasio's son Dante.

During the investigation into that claim, authorities searched his home, computers and phones and allegedly unearthed thousands of inappropriate text messages, photographs and videos.

They allegedly learned that he had had relations with six students, who ranged in age from 13 to 19, between 2011 and 2014, NBC New York reported.
