I only heard about the discovery of oil fairly recently (probably like a month or so ago), but it definitely puts a spin on things. Is this the only reason, however? I don't think so. There are certainly religious and political reasons, and the line between those two reasons are now so blurred.

What is America's interest? I heard a politician say it recently, but for the most profound ( ) reason, you should check out Governor Palin's response to this question. Don't know if I can find the youtube footage...

According to a 2004 US Dept of State report:

Palestinian Territories: 4,037185 people

Jews in Israel: 5,200,000
Palestinians in Israel: 1,300,000

So total Palestinians: 5,337185 vs. 5,200,000 Jews

So they're neck to neck so to speak.
