Smoke the Pipe ..

Some culture share a pipe of smoke among themselves and sometimes visitors ..

for either religious or social functions ..

Any ideas of what is in the "Peace Pipe" American Indians offer to visitors ..

I think other cultures share this association ..
seems mostly found in Middle / Far Eastern communities ..

any insights to offer ? ? ?

we know/ well i know of the Rastaman and his chillum with the "good weed"

I believe the American Indians smoked tobacco, which Walter Raileigh took back to England as a new discovery.

Apart from hashish, the Middle Easterners smoke shisha, a flavoured tobacco.

i think that is the name ..
it was made from some special catcus ..
and contained vivid hallucinogenic drugs ..

dat will make you have visions ..

In the ceremonies where the &quot;chanupa&quot; is passed around...usually a mixture of stuff is in it. Kanikinik (or however ya spell it) is one of the big ingredients,when you have it around. The smoke isn't inhaled...and it's released as a manifestation of a personal prayer. When the pipe is loaded, each pinch is also accompanied by a prayer. Gifting tabacco, say, to the fire-tender at a sweat lodge is kinda the thing to do as a sign of appreciation and respect.
The Native American Church, back in the early part of the last century, used peyote as part of their rituals and belief system until ....well, somebody else started imposing <span style="font-style: italic">their </span> crap on them.
Sundances and sweatlodges were technically illegal until the last third of the 1900's.

am i overboard in thinking the &quot;sweatlodge&quot; experience was a religious one .. ?
or was it social .. ??

i think their choice was opium - hasish ..

I live in Canada and have known a lot of native Canadians, so I can help a little with this question. When meeting a native healer/priest/holyman/shaman, it is traditional to offer him some tobacco, especially if you want to ask him for advice or help. Nowadays it can be symbolic, as little as giving him a cigarette. In the old days the tobacco was the original black tobacco and it was very powerful and psychoactive and not like the tobacco commonly smoked today.
Kinikkinik leaves are sometimes smoked, but so are many other herbs, depending on where you live and what tribe you are from and what is available. The truth is that nowadays the rasta comment in the original post is very appropriate - the last native who offered to smoke the pipe with me was smoking ganja, and that's now the norm here in Canada in my experience.
A really pleasant cleansing ceremony involves being &quot;smoked&quot; or fumigated with burning dried sage leaves by a shaman.
The sweatlodges are a spiritual experience and anyone can participate in them. They even have these sweatlodges in jails for natives here.
The members of the Native American Church and several other churches still legally consume peyote in both Canada and the United States, as they have since time immemorial.

Yeah, sweatlodges are spiritual, and for purification....and honoring, and praying, cleansing, etc.
Not <span style="font-style: italic">everyone</span> can do it....women, during their &quot;moontime&quot;, don't enter them,<span style="font-style: italic"> customarily</span>.
