Always used to hear dis: Jamaicans proud. For me it was and is an attribute. But more and more mi a hear dis: Jamaicans are always begging.
Yes, mi knoa, not all Jamaicans beg but unfortunately, I know too many who do.
I am afraid fi pick up mi phone. Fi opn certain email, fi read msgs pon FB. Why? caw dem always seem to start wid begging, continue wid de beggin an end up begging.
I am sorry, but wha dis oman had to say, really resounded wid mi. It sick mi stomach.
Mi knoa say it hard a yawd, but lawd ma, sometime you can jus call mi fi find out how mi is eno. You can jus sen mi a email or hit mi up pon FB fi tell mi sitn good bout yuh... It seriously cannot be just bad all de time, can it?
And yes, when yuh do send dem supm, dem doan even have de mannas fi say tanks, all yuh get is: 'Ho much yuh sen? Dat nah go enough eno...' or 'which name yuh send it eena' :/ or 'whats de #? (WU transit #)
Mi learn say mi nuffi call an ask dem if dem getti... caw all mi a ago hear is de new plight...
90% of Jamaicans are begging? Dunno. But I can count on one hand the people back home who don't beg mi fi nutn...

haven't watched it but get from the comments that the gist is the begging that goes on dese days….
it is due to socialization over the last 30yrs…..as consumerism grew in Ja n satellite dish showed all dat was available a farrin, people start ask fah instead of waiting n being grateful fi wat use to be GIVEN…..use to be that u would never beg people abroad unless is something special…mi ongle use to ask fi books from England, reference books etc…u just did not beg people fi nutten….fi real….from di likklest ting go up, being beggie beggie was looked down on……u waited to be offered
and people were grateful for ur generosity n ur thinking of dem
i have noticed dat since the late 80s, early 90s the mood changed…from u land a airport , dung to strangers a beg u something….mi no mean the usual beggar who would beg a smalls fi buy a patty…i mean airport workers who had no compunction begging u something…from wat dem see in ur luggage to wat u had awn a wear
den it trickle to friends….even the most successful, would beg u ur things….i was shocked…fi real..but then i had to remember that a lot of people left Ja n who were there n i was dealing with, some were really never see come see…dem would beg mi mi Sony products…walkman etc… it was really disconcerting...
u go out to eat n dem never have cash on dem n never seem to remember to reimburse n of course i grew up not asking as it was incumbent on the one who borrowed to repay unasked….
people mek money but r soooo stretched that some find it necessary to beg u a smalls in subtle ways..fi real….
and then i realize that i walked in two worlds even wen i lived there n most of one world is no longer on the island n the other world , well, their economic success has not meant social graces….straight up…i came to that conclusion wen after presenting two suitcases of things i had carried down , without even opening their gifts, they went straight to my things n started asking as if i would walk around naked n shoeless for the duration of the trip…n i had just arrived….and this was someone who should have known better….after that i now carry nothing for anyone..after all dem said one a tek plane wen dem ready so y bother myself…..fi real
n let us not get into the tourist scene….ohhhh lawd……but den bring dat pon demself still..

memba di song SHINE YEYE GYAL….basically it denigrated dose who begged juss fi beg sake…fi real….even in the 90s i was using creative ways to help people who needed help but i knew were proud…fi real..nuff musicians who were still unknown but trying hard to break….some rich n successful now, but i can memba wen dem a leff out from studio after a day of hanging around trying a ting, mi would ask dem fi run go get mi a box lunch or something n dem knew dem could tek di change….fi real…gi dem nuff money , way over the cost of wat i claimed i wanted….seriously…..
