KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Education’s trauma team is now working with students and staff at the Vere Technical High School in Clarendon following the deaths of two teachers and a student as a result of Chikungunya (ChikV) complications.
The student, eleventh grader Shamari Salesman, died Wednesday morning while Physics teacher Terson Toranty died in the night. English teacher Claudette Hibbert-Anderson died Thursday morning.
Principal Henritta Stewart told OBSERVER ONLINE that she is not certain of the other medical complications the three had but that each complained of symptoms associated with ChikV.
She confirmed that other guidance counsellors from various schools in the area, as well as religious leaders, are visiting with staff and students.
“...We are so devastated, the staff and also the students alike,” Stewart said.
Earlier this week, a student from the Shortwood Teachers’ College died after suffering from symptoms related to ChikV.
