Crooks backs rights to bear arms call
Radio jamaica news,Monday, 26 January 2009
Security Consultant Harold Crooks is backing calls by the National Gun Rights Association (NGRA) for more private citizens to carry firearms to defend themselves against criminals.
On Sunday, the NGRA declared that it was time for the Government to loosen restrictions which prohibits law abiding citizens from carrying legal guns.
In an interview with RJR News, Mr. Crooks backed the NGRA's call.
"It is too expensive and it is difficult to be obtained by responsible people in the country ... you can look of the evidence, even in the press, of licenced firearm holders who have repelled criminals and in many cases, have prevented murders and rapes," he said.
People being held at ransom
According to Mr. Crooks, criminals have taken advantage of the red tape which has been a detriment to law abiding citizens acquiring legal weapons.
"It is far too restrictive and the criminals have taken advantage of this ... I know of (communities) where the people are held at ransom for hours until the police arrive ... shops are robbed, people are beaten up and women raped ... one case occurred some years ago in a community called Border in upper St. Andrew and there are many cases like that all over Jamaica," he said.
There have been talks that if more Jamaicans are allowed to carry guns there will be more shootings.
But the NGRA has dismissed these claims.
At 6pm Thursday, January 29, the Association will be hosting a meeting at the Altamount Court Hotel in New Kingston to educate more Jamaicans about their rights to and responsibilities of owning guns
