A doctor who worked in West Africa with Ebola patients was in an isolation unit in New York on Friday after testing positive for the deadly virus, becoming the fourth person diagnosed with the disease in the United States and the first in its largest city.
The worst Ebola outbreak on record has killed at least 4,900 people and perhaps as many as 15,000, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, according to World Health Organization figures.
Only four Ebola cases have been diagnosed so far in the United States: Thomas Eric Duncan, who died on Oct. 8 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, two nurses who treated him there and the latest case, Dr. Craig Spencer.
Spencer, 33, who worked for Doctors Without Borders, was taken to Bellevue Hospital on Thursday, six days after returning from Guinea, renewing public jitters about transmission of the disease in the United States and rattling financial markets.
Three people who had close contact with Spencer were quarantined for observation - one of them, his fiancée, at the same hospital - but all were still healthy, officials said.

NYC officials: Ebola patient rode the subway just hours before level-4 biohazard infection confirmed


Ebola is now confirmed in New York City. I've just finished watching the press conference with Cuomo, de Blasio and Dr. Mary Travi Bassett, and what I'm hearing from these people is extremely irresponsible to public safety.

For starters, every official in the press conference repeated over and over again that there was near-zero risk of anyone contracting Ebola from Dr. Spencer, even though he visited bowling alleys, rode in an Uber car and traveled in the NYC subway system just hours before being confirmed positive with Ebola. Yet as Dr. Bassett explained, once Dr. Spencer had a fever, he was "removed from his home in an orderly manner" by health workers who were "wearing full protective gear."

Why is full protective gear necessary if Dr. Spencer isn't contagious as they claim? Logically, you can't have it both ways: either Dr. Spencer is contagious and the gear is necessary, or he's not contagious and there's no reason to wear the gear. But if there's no reason to wear the gear, then why were health workers wearing the gear?

Essentially, NYC officials think we are all just so incredibly stupid that we won't notice this glaring contradiction.

Secondly, Dr. Bassett confirmed that Dr. Spencer rode on the A Train, the No. 1 train and the L train, all part of the New York subway transit system. But none of the New York health officials expressed any concern whatsoever about the fact that an Ebola carrier was running around the NYC subway system. This is a disingenuous and even dangerous P.R. strategy to try to downplay the severity of what's really happening: a level-4 biohazard virus with no known treatments or cures is now on the loose in New York City.

In fact, NYC officials adopted an excuse-making stance for Dr. Spencer, stating, "He limited his contact with people" even though other news reports have stated he was at bowling alleys and traveling on the NYC subway systems. These two statements contradict each other, obviously, yet somehow NYC officials assign no blame whatsoever to Dr. Spencer, even going out of their way to make excuses for him. "He took his temperature three times a day... he went jogging so he couldn't have been very ill... he's a doctor so he knows what he's dealing with..." etc. Apparently Dr. Spencer can do no wrong, even if he may have exposed any number of New Yorkers to a possible Ebola infection.

Make no mistake that if Dr. Spencer had been named Dr. Abdul Mohamad and was a suspected member of ISIS, he would be called a "bioterrorist" and accused of intentionally trying to infect people. But when the exact same behavior is observed in a western doctor, all the government officials immediately leap to making excuses for his highly unethical behavior of running around New York City even after returning from the Ebola front lines in Africa. If Dr. Spencer is intelligent enough to be a doctor, why isn't he intelligent enough to know he might put Americans' lives at risk by interacting with the New York City public after returning from the Ebola front lines in Africa? You can bet that if Sarah Palin did the exact same thing, the liberal media would label her a serial killer...

Ebola isn't hard to catch; it's easy to catch which is why Dr. Spencer caught it
At the beginning of the press conference, New York Governor Cuomo stated, "Ebola is hard to catch." But if it's so hard to catch, then how did Dr. Spencer catch it? He obviously was not aware that he caught it, which means Ebola spreads so easily that it can infect you without you even knowing it.

That reality cannot be reconciled with the endlessly repeated quack medical claim that "Ebola is hard to catch." Clearly, Ebola is so easy to catch that even heavily geared-up doctors with top-notch western medicine training still manage to catch it without having any clue that they did.

When will the Ebola lies ever stop? Probably never. Even if Ebola runs loose through New York City, infecting dozens, or hundreds or thousands of people, you can always count on NYC officials to tell you over and over again how they have everything under control, and there's no problem, and you should go back to sleepwalking through life without any real awareness of the global pandemic unfolding right before our eyes.

Essentially, government officials have arrived at the conclusion that the public simply can't be allowed to learn the truth about Ebola and therefore the best policy is to downplay the real risks and hope the voters are too stupid to notice. That strategy, of course, is exactly how people like Cuomo and de Blasio got elected in the first place.

The staff called the city’s health department, which in turn called the Fire Department.
Emergency medical workers, wearing full personal protective gear, rushed to Dr. Spencer’s apartment, on West 147th Street. He was transported to Bellevue and arrived shortly after 1 p.m.
He was placed in a special isolation unit and is being seen by the designated medical critical care team. Team members wear personal protective equipment with undergarment air ventilation systems.

How can they say that it cannot be spread through the air?
I understand why they say it but it is just not true.....to forestall a panic

What if the person who is infected sneeze or cough?
Sneezing or coughing is the way in which the body tries to dislodge foreign particles which includes viruses.
In that case bodily fluids would now become airborne and in some cases suspended in the atmosphere for hours in microscopic droplets.

Anyway don't PANIC.....Just be prepared with the proper prophylactics.

Yes, that is my point. I think the doctor should have kept himself to a three week, self-imposed isolation when he returned to the States and before he got close to his loved ones. Now he could be the cause of her death.

Her fault too though. I know if my SO came back from a Ebola hotspot they would not be getting anywhere close to me for three weeks.

Now it looks like the government is going to step in and require three week isolation periods for these aid workers.
