Re: My sentiments exactly
I'm not a big fan of taking standard sacred or patriotic songs and warbbbling and adding in extra words in the name of "soul."
My mother always said that those types of songs should be sung well and straight, and I agree with her.....
Furthermore.....the hat.....lord that hat.....they should have put the Bushes on her back, spun the bow around and saved the money for the helicopter.

LOL...Aretha sang beautifully and her hat and dress was the standard Church Lady get up for momentous occasions such as Tuesday's event.
The Bow was fierce but she is after all the Queen of Soul.

i like it when they're sung straight as well, because they allow folks to join in. but then some occasions the songs are really being "performed" so people may just be content to listen to the artiste's interpretation without feeling a need to join in.

I didn't see it live, but given the elements I think she did fine! He should have used Mavis Staple but Areths was fine in my opinion.

Yeah I know it's hard to sing in all of that cold weather...same thing at the concert, my hat (not with big [censored] bow), is off to them for dat.

Miss M
Seeing the way Aretha usually dresses with everything hangin over and out....I think she did good.
At the Innauguration brunch I went to, the ladies were oooo'ing and ahhhh'ing over the hat.
I have to give her props for the way she appeared and sang. It was cold as hellllllll out there! Even YO YO Ma was taped.

Ok OK
I have a co-worker who went and she saw Aretha at one of the balls and said she looked absolutely gorgeous.

Aretha, however, is still undecided about parting with her Luke Song-designed hat. “I am considering it. It would be hard to part with my chapeau since it was such a crowning moment in history,” says the Queen of Soul. </span>
