If that is true, and you must be a "receptive" Christian for prayer to work, then the nurse was completely out of order. She may have just as well asked the patient if she was a receptive Christian.

I think she is being singled out because she asked the patient whether or not she wanted to be prayed for. What if the nurse had been of a faith that believed someone had cast a spell on her, and said to the patient, "I know how to get rid of this spell, can I have it done for you?" Any question to the patient about their spiritual beliefs puts the patient on the spot.

Why didn't the Christian nurse just pray for her? I don't think you need <span style="font-style: italic">permission</span> to pray that for someone. </div></div>

"Requires?" Surely it isn't impossible for the nurse to pray for the patient without permission?

Don't people pray for ALL of the victims and suffering in a tsunami, or earthquake, where there are few Christians... or, are the Christians only praying for the suffering Christians?

Everytime I am admitted to a hospital I am always asked what my religious affiliation is and it is noted in my chart. This means that if I need to get last rites or need religious advise or counsel then they would contact a priest/pastor/minister/rabbi that is of the same beliefs as mine. If I was a catholic they would not get a rabbi to pray with me or give me last rites. Nurses are hired to take care of patients not to pray for them that is not their job. I pray for people all the time especially my children and I certainly don't need their permission to pray for them.

There seems to be an idea hovering here that "prayer works only if you are open to Christianity." It makes me wonder if a Muslim could have an successful prayer for a Christian, or a Jew for a Muslim? Would a Muslim be poed if a Christian prayed for them without their permission? Would that prayer always fail, as it seems is implied by some posters above?

We're talking about a patient in a hospital. The nurse could have prayed for the patient "in her heart" and so wouldn't need permission. If she was going to do so audibly, in the patient's hearing, she needed her consent. Believe it or not, there are ethics involved in these things.

It has to do with a lehal responsibillity of the health care industry,from being sued by <span style="font-weight: bold">Jehovia Witnesses,if they have to do blood transfusion. </span>

I haven't been asked what religion I was in a hospital for decades. I think that JW's have to identify themselves if they don't want blood.

Asking a patient if they want to be prayed for could only be a proselytizing Christian... Can you imagine a nurse of any other religion ASKING permission to pray for you? Isn't that what her suspension implies?

You wouldn'tknow how serious this Jehovia witness,non transfusion law is.there is no othersocial subject that you spend as much time on. Going through even the cases that they have won. It os rated as high as a "No-code" or DNR order.

Almost as high as allergies
we even colour code the files like we do to these other special events.

In the health care profession,you can't rely on merely askung a person if they want blood.

Because even if that person being a declared member of the JW,and he verbally states that he want blood.

You need at teast 2 people to transfuse it, and the other professional may refuse unless the have a signed declaration with witnesses.

That is much more than meets the eye of the patient.

But isnt it up to the patient to say that they don't want a blood transfusion and not the hospital?
