Only one political party existed in 1938,and the burning of the canefields was about establishing union representation.
it was not about tribalism. That was about workers representation.Comment

Donald Burns Sangster was born in Mountainside, St. Elizabeth. He was a lawyer who went into politics and ran for election on the JLP ticket. In 1955 he ran against B. B. Coke in S.E. St. Elizabeth and lost the election. He moved to Vere, Clarendon and was elected as a member of the JLP party. During the 1955 election campaign BB Coke was known as the 'rock of gibraltar'. There was a pharmacist who bet that Lawyer would win the election and he lost and committed suicide. I always thought that he shot himself but was told about 15 years ago that he poisen himself. That was the first election that I remembered I believe he was the Deputy Prime Minister when he died under suspicious circumstances in 1965 or 1966. He was also me god father.Comment

IMO ..
tribalism did not take hold until the garrisons were established
the late 60's early 70's saw lot of the organizations take root and bear seed ..
i think at that time the violent line was drawn between comrade and labourite ..
and this was the basis of setting up garrissons ..
before that there was not much violence between either group ..
they would meet and greet and have a rum ..
and no hint of violence ..Comment
