too bad he got ten years more than the person he killed. and too bad he got lethal injection---they shoulda throw his butt in the electric chair

That's too oversimplistic for me. I take what I think is a principled position on an issue, and whatever side of the political divide it falls on, then so be it.

Actually, my first thought would be to kill him myself. But then I would question how this will help me to deal with my grief. It certainly will not bring my daughter back. It would not be, in my view, an appropriate punishment for the crime. It would go against my values on the sanctity of human life. You obviously disagree with this.

Isn't all judicial systems imperfect? That sometimes the guilty goes free and the free gets convicted seems to be inherent in the process.

Quite so, unfortunately. And it is a long held ideal that it is better for the guilty to go free than for the innocent to be wrongly convicted.

I appreciate that point of view, but the murderer doesn't have the right to decide who will die at a given point either. I do believe that where there is absolutely no doubt that a person is guilty of first degree murder, that s/he should pay the ultimate price. If there is a shred of doubt, the benefit of that doubt goes to the accused. I don't believe the death penalty is a deterrent, but I hold the view that a civilized society has to have some rules in order to avoid anarchy.

Yes, many civilized societies have rules that allow for life without parole for 1st degree murder convicts. Most of them (there are a few exceptions) happen to be stable societies with less murders than societies with the dealth penalty. You wouldn't be subtly implying that the absence of the death penalty may lead to anarchy?

The murderer cannot be said to be exercising a &quot;right to decide who will die ...&quot; He has no such right, and neither should the state.
