Shop With Mom and Pop

I was chatting with a co-worker about where to go for lunch. She said, lets try to eat at a mom and pop restaurant. <span style="font-style: italic">&quot;With the state of the economy, we should try and spend our money with the mom and pop. The big chain restaurants and shops are suffering, but I would prefer help a mom and pop&quot;</span>

Good food for thought...I will be making changes.

the up side of the mom and pop thing is that in most cases the money they make stays right in the community.

with the national chains left in the community are the low wage earners

I don't think there are any clear distinctions. I think the towns that allow these huge mega-chains to come in by giving them the keys to city should be held responsible for destroying the small businesses in their communities.

Some small businesses still thrive, but they had to step up their game. Personally, I'd much rather go to a small, cozy restaurant but the food and service have to be at least very good, if not excellent.

Yes, that's a whole other topic of discussion.

I live in a very small city. I think its about 3 miles wide. We have a Wal-Mart. A plot of land became available and Wal-Mart wanted to move and expand the store to a super Walmart. The city agreed, but had a list of certain specifications pending approval of the permit. The city wanted a build a city-walk location around the Wal-Mart, the location was to include a hotel, shops, restaurants and a small park. Wal-Mart was responsible for locating these businesses and bringing them to location.

When it was time to issue the permit, Wal-Mart said..'oh, we couldn't find anyone who was interested. We really tried, but no takers. Please issue the permit...thanks'

The city stood firm. They asked for a list of the potential businesses that Wal-Mart had contacted. It got ugly (as things can with Wal-Mart). But the city did not buckle under the pressure. No super Wal-Mart.

<span style="color: #3333FF">I was watching something a while back on Walmart. The story said that when Walmart doesn't get what it wants in one community, they'll go to the next community over and build, driving the dollars away from the community that turned it down. </span>

That is what killed them in my neck of the woods. They usually feel that minorities will drive out white customers,but without the business of the minorities,they usually fail.

People like that deserve to fail. If I go to a small establishment and feel they don't want my business, I will give them what they desire.

BTW, minorites are mom and pop owners as well.

Yuh mean support yuh community, country, and di place whe yuh live, dat provided the necessities when there was none?

But, isn't that protectionism? What about, Capitalism, di stronger survive? Why not let di market determine di outcome, as some here believe?
