colonialism better for some countries?

every time a subject comes up re the problems in jamaica- it never fails; someone mentions 'we were better off under england';

so not speaking on j-a per se, but is it indeed better for some counttries to be ruled by a more powerful 'mother' country?

I hear it all the time with respect to JA. A lot of anglophiles think like that. Jamaica's problems don't stem from parting with the british flag, in my opinion, but a failure to rid itself, after independence, of certain colonial mentality and structures - social, economic and political - as well as incompetence, lack of vision, and corruption.

We should remember that Britain didn't really shed any tears when Jamaicans wanted independence. I'm for the right of peoples to their self determination and for the sovereignty of nations, so it is hard for me to accept arguments about the utility of colonialism for the betterment of nations.

And Britain was not happy. Why then would it take all the reserve in the Bank if Jamaica and only left 1 million pounds.
The majority of Jamaicans was illiterate.
So many didn't even know that their quality of life, which include, prevention from holding even a civil service job, or even staying iun a local hotel. That was because of their colour,was unacceptable to civoilized people.

</div></div>That is because thw ewal benefuts of undependence was put out of the reach by those who controlls the world economy. They bought all our export.
They proced all oir export. They made all our imports. They controlled the proce of all our impoprts.
They controlled all our education systems. Need I say more.Mnay oif us still <span style="text-decoration: line-through">suffer </span>benefit from that education.

Yes absolutely,although it was right to give countries their independence, some werent ready for it,and the right structures were not put in place for these small islands to deal with self rule,......lack of good leadership followed by corruption,and the inability to trade fairly on the international market has left these former colonies adrift without a decent paddle.

FORT-DE-FRANCE, Martinique (AP) - Vandals burned cars and looted stores in Martinique overnight, police said yesterday as violence spread to a second French Caribbean island in protests over high prices, low pay and alleged neglect by officials in Paris.

About 20 people were detained following the outburst in Fort-de-France, the island's chief city, according to police headquarters.

Protesters burned at least five cars, several garbage bins and a small grocery store. Several stores also were looted, but no one was injured, according to a police statement.

Dozens of protesters gathered at city hall Tuesday night to demand results from slow-moving negotiations there over demands for pay increases. Around midnight, some began hurling rocks and bottles at police guarding the building, and officers responded by firing tear gas.

More than 250 French and local police arrived to help, and the violence subsided before dawn.

Martinique has not seen the same degree of violence as that on the nearby French island of Guadeloupe, where weeks of strikes degenerated into rioting last week in which one labour activist was shot dead. Business on both islands has been largely frozen.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy last week announced a euro580-million (US$730-million) financial package to help development in the Caribbean regions of his country, and acknowledged that prices are often much higher than in mainland France.

But strikers have complained that the government proposals are vague and do not directly address their demand for higher pay.

Business representatives, labour unions and government officials on both islands have been meeting intermittently to try to end the strike.

Protesters walked out of the talks in Martinique on Monday because business owners did not offer a concrete counterproposal to demands for a monthly pay increase of euro354 (US$452), strike organiser Michael Monrose said.

In Guadeloupe, government representatives left the bargaining table Monday night, saying they were not prepared to agree to a euro200 (US$250) monthly raise for those making Euro900 (US$1,130) a month. They have since been awaiting new instructions from Paris.
