Claudette Colvin was just 15 when she refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in 1955.



PORTLAND — More than 50 years ago, a black Montgomery, Ala., schoolgirl made a decision that would help change the course of history in America.

In 1955, Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white female passenger.

Colvin, who was just 15 at the time, was taken into police custody, handcuffed and jailed for her refusal to comply with the city's segregation laws.

She later went on to become a plaintiff in a federal court case that set the stage for desegregation of public transportation throughout the South.

Colvin's story has gone largely unrecognized, but Portland author Phillip Hoose set out to change that.

Hoose has collaborated with Colvin on a new book: &quot;Claudette Colvin: Twice Towards Justice.&quot;

It tells the story of how a young black girl, fed up with the injustice she saw around her, took a courageous stand at a time when the Ku Klux Klan was active and acts of racial defiance were punished with violence.

&quot;Montgomery was a very dangerous place to live,&quot; Hoose said Monday night during a kickoff event for the book at the University of Southern Maine's Glickman Library. &quot;It was Klan-infested.&quot;

Nine months later, a young black woman named Rosa Parks was arrested for a similar violation on a city bus. The black community organized a boycott against the city's bus service and, ultimately, filed a lawsuit in federal court.

Colvin testified in that case.

On Dec. 21, 1956, Montgomery's city buses became integrated, Hoose said.

But Colvin faded away, eventually moving to New York City, where Hoose located her three years ago.

As the 69-year-old Colvin rose to her feet to speak Monday night, she received a standing ovation from the more than 200 people who had come to hear her.

&quot;It is an honor to stand before you and to have the opportunity to tell my story,&quot; Colvin said.

Colvin said she was 4 or 5 years old when a white boy of a similar age asked if he could look at her hands. They were standing in a general store at the time.

&quot;We touched each other and my mother gave me a backhanded slap,&quot; said Colvin.

Colvin said that was the first time she realized that she was not supposed to mingle with white people.

As she got older, the discrimination that coursed through her life pushed her to the edge. She could not drink from the same water fountains as white people or shop for clothing in the same stores.

One of her black classmates was arrested, charged and eventually executed for allegedly raping six women.

Then came the encounter on the bus.

&quot;Something came over me that day&quot; – that was all Colvin could say about her actions.

&quot;I'm here today to let the youth of today know that it (the fight to end segregation) took a long time,&quot; Colvin said. &quot;We sacrificed so much to break down the doors, to break down the barriers.&quot;

Portland Mayor Jill Duson, who is black, said she rushed from a meeting at City Hall to attend the book launch. Duson presented Colvin with a key to the city.

&quot;Claudette Colvin changed the world. She was only 15 years old,&quot; Duson said. &quot;She made a decision that day that still echoes in our lives.&quot;
