The current economic crisis may cause all tourism to dry up for several years. If tourists stopped visiting Jamaica for two years, what would the effect be on the people, the politics, and the economy?
What would a Jamaica without any tourists be like?

During the 70's Jamaica had no Uds tourists. What the government did was prpomoted it locally and there was a lot of locaL JAMAICAN ALONG WITH GERMANS,CANADIANS ETC./
The workers would care and those who invest in it, but the average Jamaicans would not care if tourist dion't come.
As a matter of fact they would welcome the reduce rates and welcomming treatment they would get..

good question....
Ochi, Mobay and Negril would suffer the most. People would have to find a way to become more self reliant.
I would hope the govt would step in and take over the Riu's and whatnot and turn them into low income housing.

How dare you suggest such a thing....

actually, tourist figures are up for Jamaica by 4% for 2008, I read in the papers here (Bahamas) whilst other destinations declined

The economy would suffer just like it suffered in NY when tourism dried up for a while, the government would remain the same...mi noh think tourism haff annieting wid how wi run wi govahment, and the people might come to their senses that an economy cannot totally rely on people visiting...and this goes for all tourist destinations especially those with no oil or other great means of foreign exchange.

...possibly be a GOOD thing for the country..
two things pop to mind..
- possibly encourage more Farming.. make us more self sufficient
- better customer service for visiting Jamaicans who live overseas, as nowadays we treat each other like crap, but smile up as soon as wi see whan yankee looking tourist.
- better local rates, and better treatment for locals visiting resorts
- less crime (just had to throw that one in..
)
oops that was four .. yeah mi know.. mi cant count

Mango - me, personally, I wouldn't put too much stock in those percentages the government gives out, re the increase in tourists.
