Restaurant can work in Jamaica. You will need to research it, everything from location to cost and availability of ingredients.

What might work in Negril, may not work in town and what works in town may not work in Mo Bay. But if you do your research, you can have a successful business. Even securing a location, that's huge.

I helped open a restaurant a couple of years ago and it was a success,people loved the food, both locals and tourists, there was profit to be made, then one summer when I was off the Island and my niece was off the island, the 'real' owner of the property came and tore the whole place down. We had invested $7,000 USD that summer in a remodeling a building and that was torn to the ground with out notice. Not to speak of the appliances that were taken out.

So there are challenges and it is certainly not even close to simple, but people do it all the time. Location is huge.

Research it out, and then again, and then once more.

i suggest you go visit jamaica before you decide on what kind of enterprise you want to open

nuff food in jamaica - some very cheap and good </div></div>

I steer far away from these kinds of places for all of the above reasons no matter where they are. The sneeze guards are but a joke!

Different things in different areas.

I have a friend in Kingston who asked me recently what type of business did I think he can do in Negril that doesn't exist here now. My response to that is a large photo copy center. Up until recently I had to go to Mo Bay to get nice copies made. But then I found out that recently a good copy center opened up in Sav-la-mar. Well with as much business as there is in this little tourist town, Negril, if a good copy center, something like Kinkos was to open it would be a hit. It would be used by both locals and tourists.

There is also no late night coffee house or quick food to eat after hours, except Mi Yard. Mi Yard is a place where there is loud music and loads of after hours folks hanging out. It has a crowd and a vibe, but during season and maybe even after season, some place that is safe, clean, decent food and a good vibe, more of a cafe deal, would work here. Trust me, the bars and clubs and beach dances now close at 2 am and unless you want to go to Mi Yard or a strip club there is no place to go.

I can sit here in Negril and think of many business that could be of benefit to our town and as a good business venture. But it would be best for you to come, more then once, different times of the year, explore the island, find a town or community that you would like to be a part of and see what you can offer to a community.

I KNOW what happens in the kitchen after working in the business over 20 years! That's why I rarely eat out. True thing though, more people are exposed to the food in a buffet line.l I learned to never work at a restaurant that I liked to eat at. I would just get grossed out and not be able to eat there anymore!

The idea of a late night cafe sounds nice.

PS...be nice to your waitress and bartenders. I could tell you some stories that would make none of you want to eat out again, anywhere! I used to work at the finer restaurants in town.
