Local police have asked their counterparts in the United States to help them track down Andre Leslie, the Air Jamaica employee who is being sought for questioning in connection with the $61 million heist at the national carrier.
Mr. Leslie, who was employed as a Treasury
Assistant at the Airline reportedly walked
off the job on February 3, after the airline
discovered that more than US$700,000 or JA
$61 million had been stolen from its
accounts.
It is alleged that during the final week of
January, the employee made several wire
transfers to his personal account in the US.
Sources told our newsroom that Mr. Leslie
who is from Tower Street in downtown
Kingston, was employed to the airline under
an Inner City Employment Programme.
It is understood that Mr. Leslie who worked
as a ground staff was promoted to the
accounts department in January.
It is believed that after the fraud was
uncovered by the management, Mr. Leslie went
to Trinidad.
In the meantime, Air Jamaica reported on
Friday afternoon that it is getting
international help to solve the case.
In a statement, Air Jamaica's CEO Bruce
Noble said the airline's internal security
and audit department as well as its external
auditors and other domestic and
international authorities are probing the
theft of the money.
He said the airline will hold it comments on
the matter until all the facts have been
collected.
According to Mr. Noble the airline took
immediate steps prevent any further breaches
once the fraud was uncovered.
