BOSTON -- A Massachusetts anesthesiologist has been accused of fabricating results in nearly two dozen published studies that claimed to show benefits from painkillers like Vioxx and Celebrex.
Dr. Scott Reuben, who has been on medical leave at Springfield's Baystate Medical Center since last spring, focused on the use of multiple drugs to relieve post-surgical pain. Pfizer Inc., which makes Celebrex, gave Reuben five research grants between 2002 and 2007.
Baystate said a routine review in May found that some of Reuben's research was not approved by an internal hospital review board. Further investigation found 21 papers over 13 years in which Reuben made up some or all data.
Reuben's lawyer, Ingrid Martin, said she couldn't comment on the investigation.
