Community colleges are the "vo-tech" schools of yesteryear. We as Americans should invest even more into trades schools - high school, cc. These are the careers that build the country.
Obama thinks he is still on the campaign trail. His feel good speeches stating unaffordable programs are nothing but lip service. Don't take the bait. This is more politics at play. This will be dead on arrival when it gets to the floor of house and senate...and Dems can point blame at Repubs. It's simply a rediculous unaffordable program, especially for the states, not to mention the federal expense...The unconvienent truth is that the US government needs to stop spending money that they don't have and start attacking US debt.
I have a novel approach to this education problem....plan ahead for a child's education. Children are expensive, if people can't afford them, don't have them. Why do folks expect others to pay for their responsibilities?
And, college education today is a joke...college institutions and professors get rich off of an education system that hands out worthless degrees. There are many unemployed college educated people in the market place that cannot find jobs and they are saddled with unpayable debt from college loans.
I say bring back the vocational tech schools. Start in high school with vo-tech training. Plumbers, electricians, HVAC training etc. Apprentice programs such as these will give children real world jobs, respect and a successful carreer...not to mention good money making skills.
Then apply the same criteria to primary and high schools....!!!!!! let the parents pay for it all...that would reduce the deficit and give my investment in the US based funds a medium term filip!
I think the speech which was carried live on BBC world service was about legacy. (This speech was carried on BBC world service, i woke in the night, turned on my radio as i do to makee me fall asleep to the news and it is filled with yanki poltics... wanted to hear about Boko Haram not Barry O'Bama) I did my demoractic right and turned station and listened to Radio Sputinik a English Russian Radio station describing the glories of Shahkalin Island!!!)... Effectivel effgectively did a Bush...declare victory... But he still has one more campaign promise to keep: close GITMO...
the part i heard that was disturbing for the rest of the planet was an extension of the Munroe doctrine the right to unilaterally intervene militarily... Course after Iraq i am pushing for the invasion of Kanada... get all that Sand Shale Oil.....

(Big head Lonewolf, how's the wife?)
When I was in high school there friends of mine that had vo-tech training. The school had vo-tech programs that involved local business. Part of the school day involved working at the business and receiving hands on training. Many students developed a very good relationship with the company and were offered jobs after graduation.
It's a "win-win" situation for student and business.
Very kind of you to ask (wife). Unforunately she is back in University of Md hospital...it has been another twelve days in the hospital and counting. It's the nightmare that just won't end...maybe this time the Docs will find the answer.
My first post in a long time...I felt the need for some down time...brain is on overload.

yeah how is the missus firefighter ???
Actually, the parents as well as the whole community pay for it all. In my county 56% of total county expenses are spent on the school system. The money comes from homeowner's property taxes and some state contribution.
So, yes, not only the parents, but we all(folks without children)contribute and have a vested interest in the education system. Me thinks the money needs to be better spent...time to reinvent the wheel...or mommy and daddy need to dig deeper for their children's future.
Example: Baltimore City spends $15,000 american dollars per child per year for education.
If my math is correct that comes to $300,000 for an average classroom of 20 children per year?
I don't think our return for the money spent is very good.
What could Jamaica do with that kind of money spent per child on education? What would the return be with those resources?
Again, thanks for your kindness for asking about my wife, it's much appreciated. She is hanging in there, but as I told Peasie, she is back in the hospital...she needs a catch a break. It is wearing both of us down.
Lonewolf sorry to hear about your wife's troubles. I do hope they find what is wrong and get her better soon.

Yes in the US school funding comes from the communities. I think if equal monies were spent per child nationwide with a mandate of a capped percent to administration, more of the money would go towards the kids. Teachers should not have to use their own money to pay for class supplies

in scotland we have tertiary education tuition paid for through taxes. That is not a debate (they even give university students lap tops. This is not the case in the rest of the UK ... and schools paid through local taxes...ideally... The SNP used that difference to garner supprot in the referendum. I tell my children they go to university in Scotland.. In the rest of the UK they placed a cap on education tutions to the universities at 9000 pounds... with the intention that it would vary.. however all univesity have maxed to the cap...
Funny enough i would charge for tution to::::: all non STEM subjects, with the exception of languge and literature........ Alot of people are getting pointless usless degrees. Abd first degrees are becoming a pointless qualification.. There will be more aprentiships in the UK including some for subjects such as law, engineering...
i think had Jamaica had the resources this would not be a debate either.
I see tertiary education as an investment in infrastructure like health human infrastructure...
I paid for my tertiary education... i dont want any one else to have the struggles... it adds no value...
hope all comes togetehr for the missus and pass on my regards...
