~lol~ Don't sell yourself short. The resorts are hiring. It's seasonal employment, but they will provide housing and the starting wage is $18/hr. Over $20 if you have experience....

the real story behind all this is the fact that in 2009, the Jamaican government is still complicit in sending its citizens into slavery for a profit....how many have ever taken the time to look at what farm workers go thru once they get to these farms....it is ongle some yaadies who have compassion, who have taken time over the years to search out an help dese farm workers...up to lass year, an expose was done on their plight...no word from the government re any changes to the horrible and inhumane conditions these farm workers have to exist under

an to add insult to injury, many still trying, years later, to get the portion that is sent home directly in the care of some government agency...u know how once money get co-mingled how it is seemingly hard, to find an share out di poor smaddy share

an if the plight of those who got caught in Katrina is anyting to go by, the housing etc dat is supposedly provided for workers in the hotel and fast food jobs, is barely better and the cost to the worker more than they were led to believe

but desperation mek people band dem belly an hope fi di bess...juss wonda wen dis particular cycle of desperation wi eva see an end bak a yaad

This is what I'm saying. It really is a sick situation.

I recall sometime in 08 or 07, the case of some Jamaican workers going down south, Alabama or some such place<span style="font-style: italic"> (someone here will correct me if I'm wrong)</span> and it came to light the workers were being paid a pittance. They were working at a DVD replication plant. Living conditions - horrid.

And yes, we all know about the decrepit conditions many farm workers have to live thru - not pretty - I know - I've BEEN to several farms - 2 here and 1 in Canada.

And praytell, what does that $9 per hour work out to after tax, this that and the other are taken out?

It's not pretty.

Tough choices.

I dont know-here (Bahamas) those fast food joints have high turnover - if the working conditions were so good why wouldnt Canadians (even teens and seniors) take the jobs

Same thing here high turnover...mcdonald is primarely staffed by teenagers
but they are unreliable so they need a more captive workforce.....

a little different out west than compared to the East........for the moment

the unemployment rate here is 1/2 of that of the national average. We have a bit more wiggle room before we feel the pinch.

they are only paid minimum wage
The farm workers that I Know here in Canada are usually provide with housing.
and at least working in McDonalds they are working inside
farm workers have to work outside
and some come here from February
