I am so sorry to hear of Natasha's accident. This reminds me of that woman who was in a coma for a long, long time (Sunny Von Bulow sp). I went to my MD this morning near to Lennox Hill Hospital and the TV mobile units are all over on Lexington between 76th all the way up to 78th. I tell you so many trucks I guess they are all waiting for the some news to pounce and inundate us with the same news report over and over again.

CNN and my local news just reported that life supports have been removed.

Natasha Richardson, a film star, Tony-winning stage actress and member of the famed Redgrave acting family, died Wednesday after suffering injuries in a ski accident, according to a family statement. She was 45.


Natasha Richardson fell on a beginners' slope in Canada.

1 of 3 more photos » Richardson, wife of actor Liam Neeson, was injured Monday in a fall on a ski slope at a Quebec resort about 80 miles northwest of Montreal.

Richardson's family released a statement saying, "Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."

According to a statement from Mont Tremblant Ski Resort, Richardson fell during a lesson on a beginners' trail.

"She did not show any visible sign of injury, but the ski patrol followed strict procedures and brought her back to the bottom of the slope and insisted she should see a doctor," the statement said.

Richardson, accompanied by her instructor, returned to her hotel, but about an hour after the fall was "not feeling good," the statement said. An ambulance was called, and Richardson was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Hopital du Sacre-Coeur in Montreal. From there she was transferred to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

Richardson was practically born to perform. Her grandfather, Sir Michael Redgrave, was a famed British actor. Her mother, Vanessa Redgrave, is an Oscar-winning actress, and her father, the late director Tony Richardson, helmed such films as "Look Back in Anger," "The Entertainer" and the Oscar-winning "Tom Jones."


But being part of a family of actors wasn't always easy for Richardson. Her parents divorced when she was 4 and her mother, involved in controversial political causes, gave away a lot of money, putting the family in financial straits, according to the BBC.

Then there was the family heritage, of which Richardson once said, "Though my name opened doors it didn't get me work, and a lot of pressure comes from having a mother who is considered one of the greatest actresses of her generation," the BBC reported.

Richardson's first film role was a bit part in her father's "The Charge of the Light Brigade" (1968), made when she was 4. After a handful of roles through her teens and early 20s, she broke through as Mary Shelley in Ken Russell's film "Gothic," and followed that up as Patty Hearst in Paul Schrader's 1988 film of the same name.

Richardson's other notable films included "The Handmaid's Tale" (1990); the TV movie "Zelda" (1993); "Nell" (1994), alongside Neeson, whom she married in 1994; the 1998 remake of "The Parent Trap"; and "Wild Child" (2008).

But some of Richardson's greatest successes were on the stage. At 22, she played opposite her mother and Jonathan Pryce in a London production of Anton Chekhov's "The Seagull"; the performance earned her the London Drama Critics' most promising newcomer award.


She won a Tony for her performance as Sally Bowles in the 1998 revival of "Cabaret" and earned raves for her Blanche DuBois in a 2005 production of "A Streetcar Named Desire." She was scheduled to perform in a revival of Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Night Music" this year, following a January benefit performance of the show.

She and Neeson have two children, Michael and Daniel. Richardson was married to Robert Fox from 1990 to 1994.

u know, i've seen so many pix of people skiing without helmets, i wouldn't have known that it was so strongly recommended.

the paper today had someone saying a fall on a relatively flat stretch of slope is potentially more dangerous than falling down a hill, because rolling down a hill helps your body absorb some of the shock of the fall. there's no "give" when you're skiing and fall on a "flat" part of the course.

also on the day she was skiing the weather was sunny and some of the snow had melted and the run was "sticky" so her skis may have stuck in the snow such that she tripped.

all kinds of speculation.

I've never seen any of people skiing WITH helmets.
It's not a normal practice to wear a helmet while skiing.

i guess times have changed, cause all the articles and commentaries i've been reading in canada have said wearing a helmet for skiing is proper safety procedure and that nuff people do it. even nylah mentioned that her brother wore a helmet to ski and that it probably already saved his life.

Well the one thing I will always take away from this is her body, she had strong legs!

you are right MGee.

The last time I went skiing it was on a sunny day so the melting ice was compacting together. And I had a warm time staying vertical plus that kinda snow gets hard quick quick. My little friend that I was skiing with insisted that I wear a helmet because that is how she is taught nowadays out here. She wouldnt ride with me unless I put one on Quarreling with a 7 year old is no fun.

Lots more people are wearing helmets than before. But I think it is mandatory for kids at most ski hills here. Or so it seems.

I had one bad fall a few years back where I wasnt going fast at all, slipped on a slick spot that was nearly ice and flipped backwards. I smacked my head so hard that I saw stars and apparently was out for a few seconds. The snow patrol was no joke about it. They came up and took be back down the snowmobile even though I felt fine. But later that evening I developed one wikkid headache I forgot all about that until now.

You just never know.

Bwoy is a good thing mi nevah log on yestaday. Mi nevah memba who she was and when I googled her and the first photo that came up was of her wardrobe malfunction on the red carpet. I was about to make all kinds of cutting remarks. NOW that I know who she is, I realize that it was an accident.

All I can say is, I am truly sorry to hear this. It's such a talented family. I have seen her in a couple of films and I truly enjoyed her work. To see her go in her prime like this is a real loss. Apparently it was during the middle of a skiing lessons on the bunny hill. I wonder what went wrong. Apparently she thought she was fine and sent the ambulance away.

She will be missed. Her star will continue to burn brightly.
