The thread was about whether or not White Jamaicans are racist. It was started by blackgiant and the conclusion was yes some of them are. Some but not all and that includes some of these Whites and near Whites. You ended that thread by saying to me "you win".
I don't know this particular family personally but Dr. Dudd has already posted about the common practice of reading the young men the riot act if they showed any sign of being interested in any of the local (Black) young ladies and threatening them with disinheritance unless they found a more suitable (meaning not Black) mate. Based on the photo posted on page one of this thread, seems that some of these forces may have been at play. There was only one remotedly Black face among them. As I said, sure looks like racial discrimination to me.
The bottom line is that the system worked to their advantage and the disadvantage of Black people. If they had integrated with the community and truly tried to help the people around them, I suspect that resentment towards this segment of Jamaican society would not have grown to the point that people had their businesses and homes torched.
I'm not saying that this was right. Of course it wasn't the right thing to do. It's a similar dynamic that happened in the USA during the long hot summer when "burn baby burn" became a common phrase. It's not right, it's not justified but it does happen. I had not knowledge that this took place in Jamaica until you brought it up. I only remember about the Orange Street fire and the fire at Eventide home and those victims to the best of my recollection were Black. If I am wrong, I am sure someone will correct me. It's late...mi gawn.
