<span style="font-weight: bold">We'll here's one group of people (out of few) that would have a very hard time passing for Jamaicans. They don't look like Black, Chiney, Coolie, Red or White Jamaicans. They look Somali. So I don't know how this would be successful. .</span>

The only place in the world I've noticed a very large amount of Somalis is Minneapolis Airport. Don't see to many in London and I haven't spent nuff time in Toronot to notice. </div></div>

I know plenty Jamaicans that could pass for Somali so me no doubt the reverse. Jamaicans can pass for anybody which is why me take OUT OF MANY, one people so literal!

Dont really know where the tension came from,but I know of at least 3 cities here in the UK where tension is running high between third generation jamaican youths and somalians,.....I think it`s misleading to say the tension is between jamaicans and somalians,...the problems are mainly between the late generation offsprings of jamaicans.

Not to divert from the topic but I also know of one situation where british black youths of jamaican parentage have gone into a well known meeting place of yardies and held them up with guns robbed them and told them to kip their bahine quiet cos it`s them (the british) youths who run tings.

Well you see,most of the trouble from yardies usually stem from them trying to muscle into the drug trade and taking away &quot;customers&quot; from the british black youths,...and that is where trouble usually start,except that the yardies usually bring their gun mentality to bear upon the situation.

Quite a few incidences of Somali <span style="text-decoration: underline">youts</span> fighting Jamaican decendent youts in London.
But I think it's more of a territory thing than a drug thing.

From my involvement here, the Somalis tended to view Jamaicans as 'non-African' and ugly featured people, and that they (Somalis) were the true blacks/Africans. However, that said, when they would be out and around, would style themselves after Jamaicans, or pretending to be Jamaicans in order to be more accepted in the community -when it suited their purpose.

Our club (which had for years been 'the' place to party on a Saturday night, had it's major problems from the Somali crowd that would show up. The majority of the bad behaviour and violence in our club (which ultimately caused it's closure) was at the hands of the Somalis, their machetes and the insulting way they treated the Jamaican men.

SistahD is that attitude towards Jamaicans only or do they feel that way towards Carribbean folks - those born outside Africa?

I was talkinf to a Sengalese brother at the Farmers' Market today (he was selling some beautiful dolls) and when I said I was of Jamaican descent, he replied, &quot;ahh, that is why you look so. Jamaicans are one proud set of people.&quot; It was a strange way to phrase things so your comment above came to mind.

Plenty of Somalis in Ethiopia too. My wife says they're 'cruel'. They have a reputation in Africa for being ready to fight.

He would not have tolerated their aggressive manners.) </span>

There was a small group of Nigerians at one time, but their behaviours did not set well with the Trini owners/clientele as well. Ottawa is a much smaller center than Toronto or Montreal... as such so are our cultural groups. We have roughly 90k Afri-Canadians here (which is considerably smaller than most of the other major cities). Jamaicans have been migrating here since before 1940. At one time Jamaicans were the highest represented with approx. 15k, however, Somalis guickly passed that number and now have more than 25k, despite being here less than 20 years.

Stereotyping abounds, and as Jamaicans were the largest group, and the clubs/bars catered to Caribbean music/clientele more than any other groups, that contributed greatly to being centred out when problems arose. Granted we have/had far less crime (violent and non-violent) here than other cities as well, but it never stops the fingers pointing at Jamaicans first.

Somalis here live many in the downtown core or you can find some in the East corner. So, not alot of intergration with other black communities around here.

We ran a 'membership only' type club - and when we tried enforcing that distinction, they appeared with machetes and cut a few of our doormen.

The final event which caused our closure, was one individual whom clearly had too much to drink, making a series of rude, vulgar and insulting comments to one patron, not suitable for this G rating - the patron caught him outside, slapped him across the face with a gun... and the rest is history.

The patron now lives in New York.
