Several inmates of a local prison have reached out to THE STAR complaining that male warders at the facility have been molesting them on a regular basis, under the guise of conducting routine searches.
The prisoners, who claim the situation has been going on for some time, said those who were opposed to the "funny searches", were often disciplined for their opposition.
Box dem down
"More while, when man ask dem wha kinda search dat, dem box dem down and dem ting deh," said one of the prisoners who THE STAR contacted. "You have a group a bisexual warders. Dem jus walk through and sexually assault you. De man warder dem a feel up the prisoner dem and a ask dem some funny questions bout how it (the search) feels."
Inna yuh crotch
The inmate, who said he had been incarcerated for more than 10 years, described how the searches were done. "De warder dem jus call yuh 'Yow! Gimme a search' and den dem gone down inna yuh crotch," he said. "One a de time dem mi did even have contraband pon mi, but all now dem nuh go inna mi pocket."
When the newspaper contacted the Department of Correctional Services, Acting Commissioner of Correctional Services June Jarrett, said that she was not aware of the situation. Jarrett said that she doubted that a warder would touch an inmate inappropriately but asked that a fax be sent to her office about the situation to so that the matter could be investigated.
