My daughter who is 5 tries that on occasion. She knows her bed time is 8 PM (during short days) and in spring and summer, 9 PM. On weekends, she gets to stay up a little later.
You may have to bribe him because no point sending him to bed angry. Even if he goes to bed routinely at certain times, a child wants a little break from the routine. Also, make him real comfortable until he falls asleep, then lift him up and put him in his bed.
