Kingston-based medical doctor, Dr. Ian Vincent, who allegedly assisted a 14-year-old school girl to have an abortion, is to stand trial Wednesday.
The trial date was set in February when the 71-year-old doctor appeared before the Half-Way-Tree Criminal Court.
Dr. Vincent and the girl's 40-year-old mother, who encouraged him to carry out the illegal practice, were charged last year after the botched procedure nearly killed the teenager.
Dr. Vincent and the mother have been charged with procuring abortion and procuring drugs to facilitate an abortion.
Investigators reported that on April 4, 2008 Dr. Vincent examined the 14 year old and determined that she was six weeks pregnant.
He subsequently prescribed certain drugs to induce the abortion.
The cops reported that the mother was given the prescription to fill and on April 8, the child was given the drugs.
However, the procedure went horribly wrong as the medication caused the teen to haemorrhage for nearly a week.
She was rushed to the Spanish Town hospital where she underwent emergency surgery to save her life.
Doctors at the hospital reported the matter to the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse, and Dr. Vincent and the mother were later charged.
