MIAMI (CMC):
As pressure builds on the Obama administration to grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to tens of thousands of Haitians living illegally in the United States, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the United States (US) is currently reviewing its deportation policy as it relates to the impoverished French-speaking Caribbean country.
Clinton said Wednesday, a day before she left for a trip to the Caribbean, that the US will continue interdicting Haitians trying to flee their country but was seriously reviewing its policy.
"We are reviewing the policy,'' she told reporters in Miami, which has the largest concentration of Haitian immigrants in the US.
"What a tremendous burden it would be on Haiti if all of a sudden they were forced to accommodate the thousands of people who were otherwise working in our country," added Clinton, who was scheduled to arrive in Haiti yesterday, to hold talks with President René Preval.
