Agreed. If I am not mistaken, there is/was something called &quot;goodwill&quot; where some legal agreement is drawn up and both parties sign. This was to curtail the &quot;capture land&quot; practice that was prevalent then and even NOW..but as Doc inferred, in the final analysis, the land still belongs to the owner, and whatever is there is on it.

It is still legal to imprison people for homosexual practice in Jamaica, yet you you proudly in scarlet letters opposes it.

What is the difference betwen buldozing people' homes because they are unable to pay, and locking up a person because he had homosexual activities?

How do you justify one and not the other.

Is your humanitarian attitude restricted to homosexuals only?

Buldozing a poor man's home is really kicking someone when he is down, just to finish him off.
Heck, it's what the Israelis do to their enemies the Palestinians. And you have Jamaicans doing this to other Jamaicans.

You can have a 5 yrar lease with a one month notice. No business can turn around and vacate a property in such a short time.

Goes to show you know nothing about squatting in Jamaica. <span style="font-weight: bold">For the most part</span> many of these squaters all build &quot;mansions&quot; hommuch stories high, with satellite dishes and the whole nine yards...while teefing JPS &quot;light and power&quot; dressing in Versace...ahem..flying back and forth to farrin to shop...and driving the biggest and best wheels...many of them are NOT poor; no mek ghost fool yah..

I do agree however, the poorer Jamaicans should be helped with affordable housing, especially those with school-age children.

Really can't agree here about the MOST. A mansion wouldn't be so easy to bulldoze.

But more to the point whether mansion or not, if this is something that THE GOVERNMENT can legitimately resort to, then I agree with Dr.Dudd - it is no way to treat our own...in other countries those very same people would be able to claim destruction of their own property (yes, their Versace!). And where are they to turn to when their own government treat them like this, bulldozing is extreme and uncivilised for not paying rent.
But I suppose that is why most of us live abroad, because we get these rights abroad...

One last point - maybe the laws about squatting might also need a good looking at as well, it might not fit Jamaica's situation. Squatted land should not be &quot;claimed&quot; be held in trust by the state indefinitely unless a rightful owner can be proven. But the government should then have lease rights (for say 50 years) to build on the land. This might also be better protect the ownership for the jamaicans who have moved abroad.

Looks as if we are not on the same page..I agree that a &quot;mansion&quot; would not be so easy to be bulldozed, but if they want it down, it can go overnight..


Now as far as *I* know squatters are those who would squat on ppl's land without paying even one red cent...now it seems as what is happening here, is these ppl had some sort of contract to rent...two different kettles of fish.

Back to those with their &quot;mansions&quot; some of these people even own their own homes with titles in their names, that they rent to others, but choose to live for free...for hey, what is better than freeniss? Know one such person right now, even haff rum bar and grocery nearby where they squat..they make it bad for the poorer ones; but that is how the cookie crumbles.
