With war looming, surely quite a few overseas Americans would be asked to spy. </div></div> Well under the circimstances that she left the country, she could have decided to treat the country the way it treated her instead..
As a matter of fact that may be why she was so successful. since the euripeans knew that she was not fond of her country. so the last thing they expected was for her to support them in a war.

Doc, i couldn't find any reference to JB spying for the US, unless that was lumped into the spying she did for the French Resistance (which would, I presume, have the support of the Americans).

this was a hobsons choice.. given the Nazi or the Yanki.. she chose the yanqi... That she spyied for the Yanki is not unreasonable..

It is instructive though to those who would label her as some sort of hero to note that the French fought three anti colonial wars based on etnicity during Madames Baker time there. The same free -french were those that butchered Vietnamese within a month of the liberation.... In fact I beleive tjhat one of the over all military commanders who went to Veitnam spent his last night in Paris at one of her concerts..

But in the black nationalism it does not matter that she gave suckor to those that supported colonialism as long as the focus is not on Africa or black....
