Unions keep an eye on hijacking investigations
Tuesday, 21 April 2009
The National Workers Union (NWU), which represents some categories of security employees at Sangster International Airport says it will be closely watching the outcome of the investigations into Sunday's hostage situation.
The union says there are underlying problems with the security system at the airport.
NWU Vice President Granville Valentine says he is worried that rank and file employees could become scapegoats for Sunday's security breach.
"There is a serious weakness in major areas of security at the airport and we believe this should be an eye opener and they should focus on real security and not look to use workers as scapegoats or to pressure workers to the point where they are frustrated, their privacy or their persons are invaded and treated less than human beings," said Mr. Valentine.
He says the union has already collected statements from employees who were on duty Sunday night when the hijacking started.
