Boy this reminds me that life is short. I get my eyebrows threaded at this place and I saw this man behind the counter all the time.

Apparently the gunman was going to shoot everyone in the spa at the time and this man got between him and the customers.

EDMONTON — The 44-year-old man who was shot dead while trying to protect his co-workers at southside spa on Thursday has been identified as Duane Albert McArthur.

McArthur had two daughters, aged 15 and 16, with the owner of Bella Tonic Health Spa, Nina Bains.

The man believed to have killed McArthur has been identified as 18-year-old Pierre Kabema Ilunga.

Ilunga fatally shot himself outside a nearby liquor store that was robbed shortly after the murder at the spa close by.

According to witnesses, McArthur tried to grab an armed robber who had come into the spa Thursday morning. McArthur offered money to the man and begged him to leave without hurting anyone. When the robber responded, “I just want to kill,” McArthur yelled for other employees to run and lunged at the armed man.

He was then shot dead.

On Friday, a friend of the family said she wasn’t surprised that McArthur, originally from Prince Albert, Sask., died in an attempt to help others.

“Duane did something we’re not surprised he did, trying to save others,” said the woman, who did not want to be named. “That’s a very Duane-like thing to do.”

Donna Shannon, who has known McArthur and his wife for years, said he was a good man and a good husband.

“He was the nicest guy. He took care of her,” Shannon said.

I would go to the salon around the same time they said this happened. The way the salon is set up you are a sitting duck for anything like this. There is one entrance in and the rooms are at the back of the space narrow hallways and no way for you to get out.

Even if Nina re-opens I will not be going back again.

City Coun. Amarjit Sohi called McArthur's sacrifice "a remarkable demonstration of courage. It gives you hope that if you're in danger, people will come to help you."

McArthur, who turned 44 six days earlier, was shot to death Thursday morning by Pierre Kabema Ilunga, 18, who had wandered into Bella Tonic Spa and Laser Hair Removal in Mill Woods, which McArthur owned with his wife, Nina Bains.

Shannon, who spent yesterday comforting Bains and her two teenaged daughters, was told by eyewitnesses that Ilunga brandished a "big, silver gun."

<span style="font-weight: bold">McArthur tried to reason with Ilunga, offering him money if he'd just leave everyone unharmed. But when Nina came into the store, Shannon said, Ilunga turned on her, pressing the gun against her temple. </span>

<span style="font-weight: bold">There were two other female employees in the spa, one of whom is reportedly pregnant. Ilunga tried to move them all to the back of the store. That's when McArthur tackled the much larger Ilunga, yelling at the women to get out. The gun went off and Ilunga fled. By the time paramedics arrived, McArthur was dead. </span>

Ilunga later turned his weapon on himself as police surrounded him.

Shannon said Ilunga's only intent was to spill blood. &quot;It wasn't a botched robbery. (McArthur) offered him everything, all the money in the place.&quot;

Shannon, who's known Nina since they were 15, said her friend met McArthur in about 1990 at a barbecue. They married shortly after. Nina's mother, Kay, originally owned the spa but the couple took over a few years ago.

McArthur's parents and two brothers were expected to arrive from Saskatchewan yesterday, while Nina's father is rushing back from a trip to India. Other members of the Bains family are coming in from out of province, Shannon said.

Sohi, whose ward includes Mill Woods, plans to work with the community through the Mill Woods Crime Council to make sure they feel safe.

&quot;This was a shocking tragedy,&quot; he said. &quot;There are no answers to these types of things, but people have to understand that it's not the norm.&quot;

He plans to visit the family in the coming days, &quot;but right now they need some time.&quot;

McArthur's bravery reminded Sohi of Dilbag Singh Sandhu, a Mill Woods convenience store clerk who was gunned down in an armed robbery in June 2005.

&quot;It was a very similar situation,&quot; Sohi said. &quot;(Sandhu) died trying to keep his fellow clerk from getting hurt.&quot;

Sandhu's killer has never been brought to justice. Sohi said plans are in place to build a memorial in his memory.

Yesterday, a convenience store owner neighbouring McArthur's spa wondered how close he came to death.

George, who declined to give his last name, said he was opening the Lee Ridge Convenience Store at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, about 30 minutes after the shooting, when he saw a police officer putting crime-scene tape in front of his store.

&quot;This is a convenience store,&quot; said George, who's been robbed a few times. &quot;If I had been open at 10, (the killer) probably would have come in here instead.&quot;

George said Bains and McArthur frequently came into his store, and are &quot;very nice people, very friendly. All the people who work there are very nice.&quot;

yes that is what happened to him. Decent man trying to protect his wife and the other people in the salon, and he gets shot in the head This kid didnt want money - only wanted to kill that day.

Really makes me sad cause he was a nice man and so is his wife. Poor woman is absolutely destroyed right now. I will be surprised if the salon is re-opened again.
