Jamaica considers ban on pork imports

Jamaica is considering a ban on imports of pork and liver swine from the United Sates and Canada, to prevent the deadly swine flu from entering the island.

The director of the veterinary services division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Osbil Watson, said no decision has been taken but they are monitoring the situation.

The new flu virus has components of classic avian, human and swine flu viruses, but has not actually been detected in pigs.

Dr Watson said that Jamaica's veterinary services division has heightened its field and laboratory monitoring for several swine diseases, but none have been detected so far.

jamaica can't ban anything, the WTO will put a stop to that real quick.

this is so strange;
as a ras i don't eat pork, but i won't chrow word on anyone who does either because everyone has to do what they have to to survive...
but pigs have lived with & been eaten by humans for eons...
why now?

Banning inbound flights and tourists would be a more effective way of cutting the island off from the pandemic.

Only if you want to protect the population of jamaica from a pandemic. Quarantine works. Many towns survived the Spanish flu in 1918 by quarantining themselves.

Certain animals are more susceptible to diseases than others. pigs happen to be one of those animals that can get diseases that can pass on to humans easier than say cows.

As you said not to throw words on anyone but if you examine the foods the bible says is unclean, you realize those animals tend to be much easier to make you sick.

But it`s pure foolishness banning pork anyway,...the flu isnt being spread by pork,it`s being spread by <span style="font-weight: bold">people to people</span> contact,...the only effective way of stopping the disease is banning people coming onto the island,..are they prepared to do that too.

It`s obvious countries like jamaica hasnt yet been armed with the proper information to effectively fight the virus,otherwise the government wouldnt have come up with such a fool fool knee jerk reaction.

Exactly !!.......but let us imagine this happening,as some people on here have been advocating for years,lets see how fast jamaica`s economy slide,and lets see how fast these same people are prepared to leave their foreign havens to go and help out their poor starving country men.

It`s all good and well talking patriotic,and talking a load of bollocks from the relatively safe environs of a foreign country,safe in the knowledge that whatever happens to jamaica you are comfortably away from it.

Let us see when the virus eventually hits jamaica (<span style="font-weight: bold">and it will</span>) and there is not enough anti-viral drug to go around,let us see how many of these mealy mouth wanabee so and so`s are prepared to run go a jamaica to go and help the sick and the dying.
