i was lucky in that i never got that kind of upbringing. my cousin did, and it grieved me to see her turn around and give the same harsh beatings to her daughter. from what i see, that kind of "discipline" made it difficult for my cousin and her daughter to have an affectionate relationship with each other. </div></div>

Well I've had my share of manual labor and of beatings, but I can't say I was abused. It all depends on if it was a beating everyday or a beating once every few months. Not everything I did, my parents put their hands on me .
Yes I do believe some of what goes on at home turn into abuse yes and it should be looked at.
But as far as the labor punishments and the spankings I recieved. The were due, trust me

exactly. this is how nuff of my cousin's stay. They would consider themselves well-adjusted although they cant hug them kids too tough or say I love you too often.

Fair enough mi bredren... I respect your views. We don't ALWAYS have to agree LOL. In this case I stand by what I said because;

1: The law protects pedophiles from the very public you describe. They are relocated and given anonymity to live among neighborhoods even near schools with young children. Pedophilia is among some of the most trusted and respected in society and even the church cover up and protect their sick acts as if it is nothing.

2: The met police and an independent inquiry into Steven Lawrence death has openly admitted that not just the police but britain is institutionally racist. Racism is still common in the uk today, it is just more camouflaged. Nothing but token and flimsy efforts are made to tackle racism. Equal opportunity is s joke. The race relation act is ironically self explanatory and isn't worth the paper it is printed on.

3: The social workers (social services) you rightly mention works for and represent the council and the country at large. They are the face of the council/government and what they do reflect on the council/government which has been the case in the media recently.

We may not agree but debate is healthy.

I never agreed with or supported what you mentioned above. Mgee you see many people are quick to put words in your mouth if they don't like you or try to bait you.

Now I don't think Jamaican people on a whole think flogging their children in the fashion you describe is OK. My personal experience is different to yours. My parents had a balance and never physically abused me in the manner you described you witnessed. I can say the same for the friends I grew up with in Jamaica.

It is also funny how some people not you in particular, can see the wrong in what you mention yet see no wrong in finding excuses for Jamaican garrisons and political posse who murder hundreds of innocent people in Jamaica every year.

You mentioned something abaout FAKE TG, and I tend to agree...this promo is not done from the heart...it is more of a show and tell..

I don't see how they were chosen as a family to teach discipline when it is so obvious that they have a lot of hangups themselves to deal with; and I don't think the "mother acted fairly on more than one occasion"...notice that when they went to the farm, only her brother was working, there were other children who were not encouraged to "work the farm" (but) only the two British kids...although "this is how children do it in Jamaica" or something to that effect. telling the guy that "a boy's hand must be tough"..what nonsense is that? So girls don't work the farm either? Aren't they "children" also?

What I find revolting is the fact that they slaughtered the chicken although the girl was crying.....<span style="font-weight: bold">a total disregard for her culture</span>...absolutely NO consideration for her feelings which were jarred to the extent that she will not eat chicken anymore...di mother did look taken aback though as if "oh I hope I'm doing the right thing, but kill di chikkin anyways"

This scene reminded me of when I was about four years old, and they killed my "pet chicken' for Sunday dinner...until now I remember it...my parents didn't do it out of spite, just out of necessity...they weren't psychologists to know the "emotional harm it could do to the child" and neither these parents or they would have done better if they knew better...so that is a serious disqualification right there..notice, they never spoke WITH the British kids, they talked AT them...and btw I never ate any of that dinner... as small as I was Mi "stick hout and bawl, seh mi noh want none" and never ate any...I think my parents felt sorry for me then.

that's why I ask how old is the video?...we did a lot of "backward" things in trying to raise our children rightly at home/yaawd...and we seldom said as someone hinted, "I love you"...however, we have changed immensely...many parents don't spank their children physically anymore...they break the cycle with their children..as for the sex ed class...:: we are waay behind if this video is how we are still teaching it..

I have mixed feelings about this series of vids...some negative some positive...it had some okay parts but on a whole, for those that I've seen...it is not truly reflective of all of Jamaica..and our government should check it hout, learn from it...and conduct frequent information programmes to teach those think that roughing up and belittling children will make better citizens....and especially that adolescence is the time/period when they need to be most tender and understanding with them.

...an btw mi still nyam chikkin now; an don't make any "attachments" to animals that we use for food...but still.

I watched it.

Overall, I thought it was a bit sanitized for TV purpose. For one, the boy was allowed to go to school with his hat on. That would never happen in the real Jamaica in a school like that. As we saw no one else had a hat on.

The mother made a comment about, "the girl telling her parents about her feelings". For the most part, growing up, the only feelings, was what your parents told you you are allowed to have.

Also the girl would have been, cained, and expelled or suspended for writing such a paper.

It would be safe to say that most Jamaicans grew up with being flogged, and turned out well in spite of it. You would agree that, yeah we have the rmbunsious and grouchy few, but most Jamaicans are very affectionate people?

didn't watch all of the videos; i had a share of every time of upbringing...from my laid-back father who NEVER beat us and ver rarely disciplined us (but who i was most afraid of offending).
to my mother who would not hesitate or give me a flogging in extreme cases ( i wouldn't call it 'child abuse' although nowadays these kids would have her arrested for less);
to my grandmother who was a strict disciplinarian & believed in the value of chores...
now as a parent i try to draw something from each of them, but i have really come to appreciate my grandmother's views when i see these spoiled, whiny, lawless, undisciplined, rude, force-ripe yutes nowadays...
i've seen j'can parents who were too beating-happy toward their yutes but you can find that anywhere...
all this soft approach to today's yutes has produced a generation of thin-skin sissies
