I think it was probably some of the neighbourhood teens, probably some who had been invited into my neighbour's home in the past and knew exactly where to go to get what they wanted in short order.
Same thing happened a couple years ago to one of my co-workers. Except in that case the thieves broke in during the winter after a fresh snowfall. All they had to do was follow the footprints a few houses down the street right to the culprits residence.
