For what it's worth, I don't think that you should pay her more than the going rate in Jamaica, several economic reasons that I'm not sure it's worth going into (i.e average cost of living in that country Vs. America or England).
Only salary I remember was from a couple of years ago (2006) and that was about 7000$Ja per week, so perhaps add average inflation, or slightly higher. From what I recall, for someone to have a decent living from their salary, they need to earn at least twice the minimum wage in Ja. so minimum wage is bare minimum.
My brother works in a bank there and earns 12000per a week year ago after 1 year exp.
You are dead right about the sense of entitlement, and it is not doing the general economy there anygood, because people get used to having 'free' money, not developing a sense of how to earn from scratch.
