Deforestation

me always down a Pictures forum and a drool~

but....I've been noticing for quite some time now that in a lot of the pictures with sceneries of various parts of the island that there are patches of land where there are no trees, just empty dirt or dry grass in between lush green vegetation, especially in some areas where there used to be thick forest/vegetation.

I'm very concerned for Jamaica because it looks like my little island is beginning to suffer from deforestation. This would be catastrophic

....I don't know if the government is doing anything about it but they need to urgently educate the people.

People are cutting down trees and not replacing them with new plants and that is contributing to the severe weather pattern that is affecting the island.

It is either one extreme or the other, severe drought or incessant rainfall.

If they do nothing about it soon, after a while the land will become infertile and nothing will grow.

Haiti is a typical example of what deforestation can do to a country. That place now only has dirt, little or no trees or forest and the people are starving because nothing will grow on the parched, arid, infertile land.

When it eventually rains it is usually catastrophic because it results in huge mudslides that kill thousands of people.

...is anyone else is noticing the change in Jamaica's landscape??

Blame the last 18 years of lassie faire.
This did not just start; there have been many posts here about beach erosion and deforestation.
Of course the cheerleaders for the GOJ then shouted it down.

The majority of the defoerstation in Jamaica is donr by the developed countries. They own the bauxite conpanies. The world media does not mentin tht, just as they never do when the baseball manufacturesr was destroying the forest to plant sisal to make baseball in Haiti. at the rate the forest was done to make fire coal it would still be there today since they never clear cut,and the small trees would replace the large ones.

Now they conveniently blames it of charcoal. Histry is so full of down rught lies.

If they don't start soon,the whole country will wash away. What are they waiting for?
If it si money, ther nevee will beenough money to do anything. They have to find it. money don;t justt sit ther eauitying to be spent It has to be found some where.

The last time I drove on Mount Rosser, I couldn't believe the rivers of red water that engulfed many parts of the area...dung innah di precipice.

But gove it a few years. They wil sstart blamining HJamaicans fir fire wood. when less that 2 percent of Jamaicans use charcoal to cook. They will conveniently leave that out though.

The Forestry Department lacks adequate resources and muscle to fully address the problem.

Significant deforestation has been going on in the Blue Mountain Range (parts of rural St Andrew and Portland) over the last few decades. They chopped down the trees to plant coffee. The chemicals used enter and pollute the water supply - which provides water for those communities, and some of the smaller rivers join the Hope River which runs into the Mona Reservoir - other rivers run into the Hermitage Dam - both of which supply the corporate area.

I never got the impression that the PNP government especially paid anything more than lip service to environmental issues. This is not to say that the JLP government should be let off the hook, but they (the PNP) were in power for the 18 years. And if Bruce does nothing, he will own that problem. It has to do less with lack of resources and more with the lack of vision - the failure to see that environmental degradation is ignored at one's own peril.

Both businesses and private citizens are culprits. Businesses can always be reigned in, but a major handicap in dealing with individuals is - for lack of a better term - a democratic bias: &quot;yuh a fight 'gainst de small man.&quot;
