I thought he makes insincere apologies for the evil acts of the church. Namely the diddling of little children by Catholic priests.

He just recently offered a lame attempt of an apology to the aboriginals in Canada. Many of whom were forced into attending Roman Catholic residential schools as children because they were considered savages. Well you know how the story goes. Those in charge of these church run schools turned out to be the real savages. Numerous accounts of sexual and physical abuse of the children who attended these schools lay covered up for years.
