They did have that right. So the settlers killed them so that they couldn't exercise that right any more. Then the colonizers imposed their laws and property rights, and then it was illegal for them to come into your yard and start farming.
The strange thing about this story is that if it had occurred in Texas or Florida, (a man trespassing on your property with or without a gun), the homeowner-killer would never even have been charged.
