MODERN-DAY SWORD FIGHT - Machete-wielding men maul each other in roadway
Residents of Portland on Tuesday witnessed a barbarous incident in which two men, armed with machetes, engaged each other in battle.
In full view of a number of persons along the Carlton main road in the parish, the men inflicted wounds after wounds to each other and when it was over one lay dead while the other had to be admitted to hospital under police guard.
Dead is Rohan Barrett, 26, of Carlton, while a 52-year-old man is in custody.
The police say Barrett was walking along the roadway when he was approached by another man.
An argument developed and machetes were drawn and injuries inflicted on both men.
The police were called and both men taken to the Annotto Bay Hospital where Barrett died and the other man was admitted.
eyewitnesses
Constable Hopeton Henry of the Area Two Division says the police have spoken to eyewitnesses who claimed to have heard what the men were arguing over. However, that bit of information is being withheld until the man in custody is further questioned.
"Based on what eyewitnesses say, it seemed the men were prepared for each other as they both had their weapons. We won't disclose what we heard the men were fighting for, as the man in custody has not been thoroughly questioned," Constable Henry said.
Just two weeks ago, two elderly farmers from the parish became the talk of the town after they contested two rounds of fist fighting to the amusement of many who gathered to witness the 'boxing match'.
The fight was reportedly sparked after one of the men, who are both in their 60s, was accused of beating a cow which belonged to the other
