KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica's two most promising junior athletes, Michael O'Hara of Calabar High, and Jaheel Hyde of Wolmer's Boys will be barred from participating as high school athletes at the prestigious Penn Relays set for April 23-25.
The Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) issued a statement today saying that both athletes are ineligible to participate based on a ruling from the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletics Association (PIAA).
“In a communiqué to ISSA, the PIAA today said that both athletes are deemed to have received benefits related to their athletic skills and performances which are not available to all students at their high schools,” noted the ISSA statement.
On this basis, both athletes cannot represent their respective schools at the 2015 Penn Relays,” it concluded.
Hyde is the World Youth and Youth Olympics 110m hurdles champion and the World Junior 400m hurdle champion but has signed a deal with telecommunication provider LIME as their ambassador.
O’Hara, who is the World junior 200m champion, recently signed with LIME’s telecommunication rival Digicel, as their ambassador.
